So tonight I noticed the exhaust on my GTP was pretty loud. I took a look underneath and sure enough my resonator (2nd resonator this car has had, original one rusted out) has a crack in it towards the front (maybe two or three inches long), pretty close to where the resonator and the downpipe come together. I'm most likely going to see if my mechanic can either patch it up or weld it shut, but if I end up needing a new resonator what would be a suitable replacement? I've heard a lot of people putting glasspacks in place of their resonators on GP's and based off of YouTube videos they sound decent and in many cases close to stock, and they appear to be a bit cheaper than replacement resonators. I currently have a front PLOG, 3 inch ZZP downpipe and stock mufflers. What are your thoughts? Thanks!

Fix it if you can or just slap a huge glasspack in there.

You won't notice much a change even if you need the glasspack.

I had a new resonator welded in last month for $85 out the door.

i just put a 28 / 2 1/2 inch thrush glass pack on to replace the resonator. the car is actually quieter now than with the resonator. first stop sign i hit i thought the car stalled because it's so quiet. hopefully it'll get a little more sound after the fiberglass melts a little. the only thing i can hear now when i get into the throttle is supercharger whine.

That's exactly the kind of review I'm looking for. Thanks! You have a link to the exact gp you installed?

here it is at amazon , i bought mine at advance auto , same price...thrush
    24214

    http://www.amazon.com/Thrush-24214-G.../dp/B00029J3KM

it's 2.5 inches in / out , so it's a little bigger than the stock exhaust. had to weld an adapter piece on the back end and i welded a new flange on the dp end because the old one was shot. you can get the 31 inch ,2.25 in / out (# 24205) but i wanted the 4 inch body instead of the 3.5 for better flow .. at least it does in my mind..lol

this is the flange i used to connect to the DP...much heavier than the stock resonator flange
    http://www.amazon.com/Dynomax-41806-.../dp/B0015KU072

bought it from rock auto along with a new gasket (cheapest price). they might have the GP too.

why pay 70 - 80 dollars for a resonator when you can use a 25 dollar GP and get the same results ? i have zero drone. actually i can't hear exhaust at all...lol ...damn dynomax turbo mufflers !!!

keep in mind that Glass packs DO get louder over time as the fiberglass melts.

i got the thrush 32 inch cut the inlet tube off and welded it to the body of the G/P. got the flange at the local muffler shop for ten bucks. even with the headers and no cat it was quiet. added a cat its still the same, no difference in sound at all, still quiet lol how i like it.

Scotty i don't know how long yours has been on , but have you noticed it getting even a little bit louder ? i wasn't looking for noise , but i at least would like to be able to hear how the car is idling. i can hear it for about the first 30 seconds after a cold start.

Now all I need to find is a set of used SS catback and I'm set. I'm thinking with two mufflers it will be even quiter, I hope. Yeah, I would prefer if it sounded like an electric car. Only thing I want to hear is blower whine

its no louder 3 years later now. and i added the headers after i already had the glass pack.

the new bottom swapped engine also is dead quiet.

On the topic of resonators, the Walker one I had installed less then a year ago failed this week in a way I'd never seen before. The spiral corrugated lining came loose inside the housing. Sounds like someone playing the triangle though my exhaust. Initially thought it was my cats heat shield bouncing around.

Oh well, gotta go get an alignment today anyway, might as well pay them to slap a glaspack in too.

Thanks for all of the responses guys. My resonator ended up breaking all the way through by where it connects to the downpipe (open exhaust... REALLY loud haha). My mechanic ended up welding it back together but I'm not sure how long that will last mainly because the crack was surrounded by rust. I'm skeptical about the glass packs idk how long they usually last, but they're cheap so I'm not ruling them out. I was looking at a magnaflow one (#18145) made of aluminized steel for like $60 maybe I'll try that.

did you even read the posts ? industrialfish said he's replacing his resonator after only one year and scotty said his glasspack is still going strong after 3 years. guess who's cost more ? you can buy 2 glass packs for the cost of that one resonator. maybe the res will last a little longer, maybe not , but it ain't gonna outlast 2 gpacks.

Granted, I got my resonator on eBay for $50 and bolted it on myself. But the Thrush was only $26 plus $53 to have the shop put a flange on it and weld the other end in.
