    Hey guys,

Took the car home from school today (3 hours of boredom on the interstate). When looking on the torque app, my trans temp was at 224* F. I was doing about 85 and even when I dropped to 55 for construction the temp stayed the same. That seems really high as to my dad's 2013 F150 Sits at around 195*. Is it? Think It's time to invest in a Trans Cooler? The car has 122k and the trans was rebuilt about 15k ago.

    Thanks

    Chris

IMO all 4T65es should have a cooler. ASE says ATF should be 175*F and for every 20*F you increase you cut the life of the fluid in half, and at 230*F you have the potential for valves to start sticking in the valve body. ATF should last 100,000 miles or so, but companies rate set the maintenance interval at 50,000 since they run at 195*F, right around the engine temp (no external cooler needed).

That is pretty warm in my opinion, I'd be a little worried. Where was your engine temp?

I would get one, yes. I picked up a pretty cool (no pun) cooler off of an Exploder at the JY. Has mounting tabs and everything.

Not my pic, but I remember it looking like this originally:

I snagged a Hayden cooler. A shift kit will help too. I have to do one of those next.

I need to find the fittings that go directly into the trans with the barb on the end for my rubber line because I want to run my cooler stand alone.

Also wouldnt hurt to make sure your duct work under the bumper isnt missing or damaged.

The lines do run across in that area and one would think that the rushing air past them does help cool them. I might be odd ball thinking here but it might be true that it helps.

Or maybe the factory cooler itself is semi plugged, it should stay near the coolant temp when you arent in traffic. I remember going about 240 miles without stopping and never saw over like 180.

Can you explain more about the duct work? Also, how would I check if the factory cooler is semi plugged?

The average I've seen on the site in the various cooler threads is 180-195.

I saw 235 on a 90 degree day after a 2 hour road trip what killed it was a little traffic and it never recovered. My air ducting is there. But I bought the cooler **** next day.
Edit. I see around 170 depending on temps. I expect I'll see less once I got stand alone.

Careful, don't go too cold, 150* is the minimum.

I thought 78 was. That's when the Tc locks up.

Even in minus 10 degree weather if I let my car idle for one cycle of the remote start and drive 5 min down the road mines at 78 which I thought was operating temp.
