When I start my car, it goes about three lines higher than what it really is, and then levels out after I get a mile or two down the road. What could be causing this? Fuel pump? I think they started mounting the sensor in with the pump after the mid 90s?

It's totally normal. Especially if you start up and jab it in gear while it's doing it's preliminary needle test swing.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

No, it happens when I let it sit. I always wait about 20 seconds before I throw her in gear.

Same, except mine sometimes won't go back down. It really only starts though when the tank gets down to about 1/4 full.

mine had a crap autozone non venture replacement fuel pump when I got it. it would show low fuel when it still had 7 gallons in the tank. I put a OE factory pick up in it with a racetronix pump. works great now. maybe yours is something similar?
