i just got everything but the pulley done. open cone filter, 104's, 3" dp, ported front manifold and 180* tstat. i scanned to check for kr and found none so i was wondering if i could drop to that 3.4 now.

Go for it. Just make sure you scan when you are done.

97-03 or 04+? 04+ you probably wont be able to get away with it. 97-03 you might be okay if you've got a pretty well maintained engine. As slick said just make sure you scan for KR after dropping and be careful.

so i put on the 3.4 last night im still not showing any kr. how often do knock sensors go bad? it ran realy well with it pulled hard and smooth. i was just expecting to see some here and there at shift points. but i ran it wot through 3rd gear and didnt see any. timing advance was 16* at wot and 27*-30* cruising

I think you'll be fine, i actually had the same thing happen to me after i put on my headers, but it started showing some knock at certain points

Im not sure exactly how our knock sensors work, maybe someone else could shine some light on this, but in my z, the knock sensor is either working or broken. and you would get a check engine light when its broken.
