Just though you guys may like to see the email I got from Girots garage
Hi Logan!
Thanks for taking the time to email us here at Griot's Garage with your orbital questions.
Both of our machines do have a working clutch which allows the backing plate to spin at different rpm depending on machine load. The backing plate speed will perform at various speeds depending on where the variable speed dial is set and how much or little weight the user is applying to the machine while in use. Because our machine is an orbital the backing plate is also vibrating in small orbits. You can also see a video of our machine in action on our web site. Just type in one of our orbital item numbers (#10813) and scroll the page down and you'll see a few demonstration videos. The very first random orbital machine that Griot's offered was the Porter Cable which we carried for several years. We have since designed our own random orbital with better specifications and a life time warranty against manufacture defects.
