Anyone have any info on replacing the stock steering wheel with an after market one. Plus air bag elimination.

There are a few if you search. Here's one that looks decent---> http://www.grandprixforums.net/anyon...-gp-43103.html

Beyond that, not many do this mod. The only issue is that if you remove the airbag and get into an accident, your insurance co. could deny the claim because you modified a stock safety feature. Just a heads up. Usually only see a modded wheel on track only cars.

Claiming ignorance is never a good idea. The Insurance companies will always win. It's a mater of law. Personally, it's not something I'd want to leave to chance.

Illinois also does emissions testing. Don't know if those guys can note safety issues or not.

I've lived here all of my 49 years and illinois has never tested any vehicle for emissions. I just wondered about the steering wheel because I'm installing an after market stereo and would rather replace it instead of spending 60+ bucks for the audio control piece.

It might just be on a county-by-county basis. Some family friends have talked about it and the annoyance.

I'm not an expert, but I'm pretty sure that cars have been required to come with steering wheel air bags for many years. From that, I would assume that you need one legally.

Why not just just install your aftermarket headunit and live without your steering wheel controls? No sense in replacing the steering wheel just for that reason.

You could always get one of these. Its on my list eventually when I get a different car for a daily driver or if I ever got a harness seatbelt since there wouldn't be any airbag. You have to get the hub and then you can bolt the wheel directly to it or get a quick release. I think the quick release is awesome

    ^ this.

Having steering wheel controls can't be more important than having an AIRBAG that can potentially save your life.

Look I wasn't asking for snarky smartass responses. Each of us has our own little silly things we might like to do with our cars so there's no need to reply to a post if you don't like the question.

It is not illegal to remove airbags. Now, when it comes to selling a car, you are not supposed to be able to sell it with "safety equipment" removed.

Personally, I dislike airbags. They are more trouble than they are worth. I know more people who have had injuries caused by airbags, than have been "saved" by airbags. Wear a seatbelt. There is a reason the airbag system is called SRS (SECONDARY Restraint System). The Primary restaint is your seatbelt.
