I have an 05 grand prix gt2 and have heard about many modifications to increase mpg. These mainly include using a cold air intake and tornado air. After doing some research I have wondered what would happen if i took off the whole intake and basically straight piped it (with a aftermarket intake and hose). Other ideas included removing the restricting plate or what ever the bottle neck is near the MAF sensor. All other ideas are welcome as gas is not getting any cheaper for any of us.

A full tune up sounds like a better idea to me.

Plugs, wires, MAF sensor cleaning, throttle body cleaning, new pcv, new o2 sensors if they are over 80-100k miles old, new trans fluid and filter, oil change and new air filter etc etc.

And a right foot mod. Make it lighter.

You wont see much by modifying the intake other than maintaining a clean filter. Basic maintenance goes further than mods.

This is what I was talking about, it comes with a hose to replace from your MAF to the motor. My understanding is it gets more oxygen in the motor to boost hp and mpg. My dads mechanic suggested it since he put it on his trailblazer he has noticed a difference.

Most of the basic mantience is good. I don't do bad now averaging 22-23 sometimes more with mainly highway driving. I just think it can do better. I saw an ad on here for a $69 grand prix chip that will increase hp by 60 and 6-7 mpg.....I wonder if that works or how complex it is to install? A few mpg here and a few there gets to 30 or at least thats my goal. What do you get on yours?

Please don't fall into those eBay chip ads. Ill link you to the safety modding thread it should cover a lot of your answers.

Chips are fake and don't do anything. The metal insert in the intake tubing wont do anything either.

Re-read what I said in my previous post and if any of the thing I said havent been done, maybe look into doing those because I'm sure some of them will help.

Bottom line that tornado or those chips really don't do anything. The tornado is nothing but restriction and the chips aren't that great. The best things for MPGs are improving flow through the motor, tuneup, a tune, and the best one: driver mod. A basic short ram intake, least a downpipe/ubend delete, and tuneup will be cheap and easy to do. These mods will just make the motor more efficient and the tune will dial it in. Just changing the way you drive will make the biggest difference. If you really feel adventurous start looking at aerodynamics after you've done everything else.

How to get good gas mileage:

    • Fresh iridium spark plugs every 100,000 miles
    • Fully-inflated tires
    • Aluminum lower intake manifold gasket - if you don't have this, the nylon stock ones eventually warp and you burn coolant, lowering mpg.
    • Clean throttle body
    • Clean maf sensor
    • "hot air" intake - for you, it's a 9" dry (not oiled) cone strapped to your maf sensor tube, air box removed. Leave the MAF screen in - it's necessary.
    • Maybe headers
    • Keep your foot out of the throttle
    • Emptying your junk out of the car

Things that will get you worse gas mileage:

    • Believing that guy your dad knows is a mechanic
    • A chip
    • A tornado
    • Magnets
    • Any other snakeoil junk you've heard of

Irridium spark plugs last 100k mi and work just as well as copper. Copper is a waste on N/A and only lasts 15k mi. Don't use Platinum.
Use 195* tstat unless you can thoroughly explain why not; 99.9% don't need a lower temp.
Almost any oil filter, ever, is of higher quality than ACDelco. Spend $6+.

Don't fall in to those chips on eBay, JUNK! Also a cold air intake doesn't do any good at all besides make your car sound different. I really think it depends on your car, they all get different gas mileage. I have a 2000 GT Coup with a cold air intake and I get maybe 28 highway according to the DIC which isn't the best to go by then again I have a 2002 Grand Prix GTP Coup and get 30.6 highway and roughly 460 miles to the tank full. Here is the photo of the air filter I just took out the black GTP, its hard to believe its been doing this good on mileage.

It depends on the year with the hai. the 98 and 97s will pick up more as the stock design was so bad that GM changed it in 99.

Posts like these seem really troll-ish. Whenver I see tornado air, a chip, and "I should pick up 60 hp and 6 mpg" I always scratch my head, as I've seen this a ton on other forums.....

Sorry OP if I'm wrong. When you understand that the less your engine has to work, it's easy to figure out how to improve mileage. Getting air in easier (ie, not adding in another intake restriction) will improve mileage simply by reducing the work your engine does to pull in air, which is why a fresh air filter is helpful.

Other things like O2 sensors make sure your engine isn't injecting too much fuel due to faulty air/fuel readings, clean MAF's make sure that you're ECU isn't injecting too much fuel due to a faulty mass air intake reading, fresh plugs and wires make a hotter spark and ignite fuel quicker and easier....etc.

We will have to wait and see when I get my new air filter in the mail, got a good deal and ordered it online. I have heard from some people, after they changed their dirty air filter, MPG went down.

Just bought a cheap filter at auto zone for 7 dollars just to get the car on the road because the weather was nice and my 40 dollar filter didn't come in the mail yet. I took a round trip for 150 miles and averaged 31.5 on the way there and maybe 30.6 on the way back and it was very hilly. About .5 MPG increase. Not as good as I thought it would be, can't wait to get the new one in which is K&N!

I will be extremely happy if I can get the car to average 31 to 32 MPG, I would say that is pretty good for a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP. Granted I do drive conservative using cruise control on highway, don't expect to much around city. I usually just use my Red Grand Prix GT which has 80K and keep my GTP garaged. It has 58K on it and don't like to drive it, weekends and only when the weather is good.
