Sound like you could be having a sending unit problem.

Relatively easy to replace, unfortunately the fuel pump and the sending unit and the float are all 1 unit. This is the best deal I've seen yet: Replacement Fuel Pump Assembly and they come with a 12 month/12,000 mile warranty.
