Well I'm off to work. A local shop can do all the work for fairly cheap, so unless you have something big up your sleeve to convince me otherwise, I'll probably just get a glasspack welded in or keep it 2.25" from the stock resonator for now. Not changing it again for at least 6 months.
Well just fyi the stock cat back on our cars is good till something like 350 whp anyway so unless your making that much power or plan on making that much power your wasting money replacing the piping anyway.....
the glass pack cost 25, ( i got a 32 inch, thrush) it cost 10 more for a flange, (this flange can only be found at a muffler shop) and 15 more to have it welded on, that makes it cost 50 now.
the Y pipe is 120 ish, you will need 3 new clamps, 2 new nuts and bolts for the cat to res flange, and a new gasket another 8 bucks, so call it under 200.
so being you have 2 new mufflers sitting there, a whole new cat back will run less then 200. and later on you can change the mufflers yourself if you find you dont like them. just dont clamp the crap out of them and they will come off later on nice and easy.
I don't just have mufflers sitting around. They just got here yesterday after I spent almost $200 on them. I would have no way to even get the Y pipe to a shop to get it welded on anyways. Either way anything other than just getting a new pipe and putting the muffler in will have to wait at least 13 days(plus 5+ for any shipping)
Previously you said that you had a gift card and got them for pretty much free? You can clamp the y pipe on like Scotty suggested.
Gift card is cash value on what you spend it. I could have spent that gift card on anything else or sold it. Sure the money didn't come directly out of my pocket, but it is money still spent. Clamp the $200 parts on? I understand that. A shop can do the work for $150 so what's the point in clamping it. Not really getting much help here so may just go with whatever I personally decide.
Thanks for trying to help, have a nice day.
Wow really? I guess you can't help people who are unwilling to accept the help that they are given.
when a shop welds your mufflers on, they need the car or it wont look right at all.
id wait the 2 weeks and do it right. shop the net for the cheapest Y pipe you can find with free shipping.
all you need to bring anywhere is the glass pack to have the flange welded on. its 28 to 32 inches long, it will fit in the car or truck no problem.
you will want to measure your stock res, flange to outlet tube end, get a glass pack as close as possible in inches.
the 32" i got, with the outlet tube cut off one side and flange welded on now measures 31" inches, i needed 30", so a inch longer was ok.
so your clear, welding on a flange will remove 2 to 2 1/4 inches off the glass pack length. you need to a bit of math on this one. try not to be off more then a inch in either direction. the rubber hangers will allow this much of a change.
i love when noobs come in asking for help and then get all butthurt by their own stupid decisions smh

poke dont flip out, not needed.
if the shop wants 150, id spend 50 more to have all new pipes and res. and also be able to change the mufflers later on myself if i wanted to.
remember your Y pipe is what 14 years old, im sure its rusted up and getting thin.
its money well spent really, you get a better over all exhaust system, and the shop get 25 bucks for their welding skills. the rest went into new parts, not the shops pocket.
in the end its your car, do as you like, pay 2 times to change mufflers if you want, your money, your car. peace im out.![]()
Selling flowmasters after all the bad things I've seen about them. If you have advice on what brand glasspack and/or mufflers to get feel free to put your info in, it would be appreciated. I'm thinking Borla or Magna. I would be getting new piping either way. Not flipping out, just busy getting ready for work. This is my last post though as I'm literally getting in the car now to leave, have a nice day all.
i have to be honest, i dont think theres a muffler out there that sounds good to me. they all sound like crap, backfiring, and popping, and sounds like a raspy raspberry to me.
borla are the best sounding out of them all. if i can even say that and make myself believe it. the 3800 is not known for its great exhaust sound.
if you cant tell yet, i like my car quiet. gives the cops nothing to look for. its never good when they hear you 2 blocks away.
the glass pack brand dont matter one bit, use what ever your local parts store sells. they all run 20 to 25 bucks.
