Help! No heat, blower motor issue???

We had the first snowfall of winter today and my heat won't work on my 05 Grand Prix base model. Last week the blower worked just fine on all levels but wouldn't blow warm air. I took it in for an oil change on Saturday and had them top off the coolant levels. After the oil change I had heat. This morning I get in to go to work and now the blower stopped working. It won't blow air out of the vents on any level or setting. It was a very cold hour long drive in 20 degree weather. I want to get to the bottom of the problem fast as winter is fast approaching. Any idea on why the blower would quit?

Okay, now without any changes, the blower started working again, but again it doesn't blow heat, just cool air. I am really confused.

warm the car up, see if the heater hoses are hot, if they are cold, you need to flush the core out. the 2 hoses off the back of the alt to the fire wall.

if both hose are hot, your blend door actuators may be dead.

yup. blower motors go out also. not common, but not uncommon. just replaced mine yesterday. at least its ridiculously easy to replace. on my 04 with 175k miles

Mechanic thought it was the water pump so he replaced that for $200. Then turns out he found coolant in the exhaust so he said the intake gasket was bad. Replacing that now for an additional $527. Hope this works. I'm surprised to be having this many problems with only 100,000 miles on the car.

Intake gaskets normally only last 75-100k miles, so its right on time for them to fail.

Hopefully he is replacing them with the new metal style gaskets that are way better.

i just did my lim gaskets, cost me 60 bucks and a afternoon of my time.

i did my water pump last year for 40.

Wow, I wish I knew how to replace those things myself. That would save me a lot of money and frustration. Unfortunately, as a girl with little interest in fixing cars, I can barely fill the air in my tires without messing it up.

My car is the 2005 Grand Prix. My mechanic said I have the metal gasket, I remember that distinctly because his first guess before replacing the water pump was the intake gasket. When he saw that I had the metal gasket and not plastic he didn't think that was the problem. After superfluously replacing the water pump, he then found the gasket leak. This better fix it and last for awhile since I just paid off my car 2 weeks ago and was hoping to have it stick around for awhile. Are there any other common problems I should look out for or preventatively watch?

I went through a intermittent blower motor issue this summer. I replaced the resistor and it didn't cure the problem.

I'll cut to the chase. When your blower motor doesn't run tap on it with a small hammer and see if it starts to run. Check the plastic cover plate that fits over your blower motor. Wipe it clean. Is your paper towel dark gray/black? That is what is left of the brushes to your Vietnamese blower motor.

My 2004 Grand Prix had a defective blower motor.

I didn't catch the blower motor soon enough because I had also blown a fuse. Make sure all of your fuses are good before buying any parts.

I got my car back for the mechanic this weekend. Water pump and intake gasket replaced. My blower is working and I am getting luke-warm heat out of the vents. It doesn't feel very hot and I'm worried that there is some other issue. Any advice if it is blowing luke-warm air when the heat is on high? I am sick of spending money on this problem. I just want heat for the winter, is that too much to ask?

pop the hood, off the rear of the alt is the 2 heater hoses, see if they are getting hot. if not, take them both off, and put a garden hose to one of the heater hoses, dont matter which one, and flush the core, and fill the hoses best you can, and put them back on.

Did you replace the thermostat? Maybe it is stuck open.

I'm not sure if the thermostat was replaced. I'm going to have to call the mechanic and see. I'm also going to check the hoses coming from the heater core to see if there is blockage there. The heat coming out isn't cold, so there's some heat.k It's just not hot like it should be.
