help? igniton or staring problem

Hey guys im new and I recently got a 91 grand prix se, the ignition key was messed up like someone took the key out in the 'on' position and has been stuck like that. well today i had the car running and attempting to fix it and i turned it to the start position with the car already running and the car died and doesnt even crank over now.

does anyone know what it could be? the starter? ignition key? or something elese with the ignition or starting?

dang new switches for concsel shift the are over $100 would it be easier to just switch out the steering column?
