My 205K mile rack is still in my car. I'd leave it.. hanging right there w/o pissing it off. If you piss it off...you may have to replace it.
That's kind of my thought- don't fix it if it ain't broken.
Then again, that's my thought on the LIM gasket. I have the crappy plastic one, but it doesn't leak at all (no coolant loss and no fouled DEX before I switched back to green). I don't see the point in replacing it until it actually breaks.
Don't fix it, I went through 3 racks in 7 months. A-1 Cardone reman racks are EPIC FAILS!!!!!!!! On these cars there are no adjustment sleeves and the part you turn (gets turned) to adjust alignment is the output shaft on the rack. Seems like EVERY TIME I went to get it aligned after the "new" rack was installed it leaked within 24 hours. So far this 3rd rack is holding up. Don't replace it. It's not a hard part to replace in the car anyway (or maybe easy for me cause I've had tons of practice...)
My experience on the LIM gaskets says your outlook of that should be changed. Loosing a ps rack is quick simple and relatively cheap to fix. Usually there's no detrimental problems that can arise if you let it go.
LIM gaskets bowing and coming apart can dump coolant into the engine and destroy it. Dex BTW was never the cause of the gaskets breaking down..so can the theory you are good because you don't have it.
I only dumped the dex because they had the green stuff at Sam's Club (peak long life). My understanding on LIM failure is that the inner seals bend (I've seen photos of failed LIM's). Coolant chemistry should have nothing to do with this as it's a mechanical/structural failure.
You brought up the Dex while talking about gaskets. I'm merely mentioning it has nothing to do with the going bad. Yes they bow..I've seen them crack and when the seals around the coolant ports go..it can be ugly. Isn't usually..but it can be.
What are the symtoms of LIM failure? I presume they're coolant loss and potentially oil in the coolant or vice versa.
I've had several people tell me to change mine - but I guess I prefer to let sleeping dogs lie.
Personally:
1) I was having to "burp" the cooling system once every other week and progressively got to where I was burping it once a week or so. When I say burp, I would remove the thermostat housing, fill from the radiator cap until water filled the block and ran out the thermostate opening. I would reinstall the thermostat then start the car until running temp and the thermostat opened. All the air would come to the radiator so I would top off with water and carry on for another week or so. LOL Also helps if the car is on ramps to raise the radiator filler neck higher then the rest of the car.
2) I could tell a loss of power. I am picky about my car and notice small things. I could tell that there was a power loss from a cyl or two buring water as well as gas.
3) Could smell coolant burning while I ran coolant. Mine became eventually all water and I would experience a little sluggish startups with a small amount of white smoke.
Dex cool is a inferior coolant....flush that **** ASAP ...Dex cool is only known for causing problems...the revised lim gaskets are nice being a metal, but still Dex cool kills them...Dex cool is almost corrosive
But on topic....if there is noting wrong with your rack why replace it? On top of added costs of the rack plus alignment...leave it alone
I'm not a Dex lover, but you have it quite incorrect. Dex is not the same formula from 1996 when it first came out. You don't find a lot on that, but they've changed it to be less oaty. If air is introduced then it can become like oatmeal. If it's left in a car past it's service life it might become a bit acidic. Many people don't maintain their cooling systems properly because it keeps on working. Hence the issues.
Me, I use anycolor ... one and done.
As a certified gm tech, I can tell you Dex cool is garbage.....from day 1 until now...only people that use/stick with Dex cool are the ones that don't no any better other than what the manual says....as far as the G-05 goes....it's made by zerex and is great...I use it now
Prestone All Makes long life is Dexcool.
The ideal coolant to use its something called G-05.
It provides instant corrosion protection, unlike Dexcool which requires a "break in period" before it starts to provide corrosion protection.
You can find it at napa for a reasonable price.
