Fuel level senders are simply a potentiometer connected to a float. They never have been very accurate. A better way to check distance left to empty is to always reset the trip meter every fuel up.

On the highway I can get well over 400 miles on a tank without using more than 16 gallons.

after a certain year all cars pretty much got a low fuel light, that light was intended to let you know you have 100 miles left. not just GM but all cars. iirc it was some kind of law/ruling so they had to make it that way.

i dont know of may cars or trucks with out a low gas light these days.

not that the light is 100% accurate, every cars fuel float/sender is different in the long run. even same cars side by side will be different.

My 96 aurora could go maybe 20 miles on the low fuel light. So if it came on you better be close to a gas station.

Doesn't the newer cars tell you how many miles left until your close to being out? And my owner's manual did say 18 gal.

    Miles: 170-XXX

my regal has a range button, when i do look at it, when the light comes on it was 60 miles or so left in the tank. but that is also a avg based on your mpg avg from the dic. being mine is always at 14.0 or less, due to local driving, it seems about right to me.

i had cars from the 70's cars and truck, some would run for ever flat on E, and other well like you said you'll learn how much is left fast.

my 77 rabbit was out of gas if that needle touched the line lol
