Hello everyone, I have a 97' Grand prix gt that I bought a few months ago, and the a/c has not worked at all since I bought it. The a/c compressor cluth would not engage or anything. So hoping to get lucky I went out today and bought some r-134a to recharge the system hoping everything would be fine. Well it's not .

When I added the refrigirant everything seemed fine, the clutch on the compressor engaged and it started blowing cold air out of the vents. However the clutch didn't disengage at all. I pulled the relay and switched it with the horn relay to see if that was the problem, and same thing. As long as the a/c is on, the clutch is engaged all the time. It was 80 degrees here today, and the can I used said for that temp. fill to 50 psi, and I filled it to about 47. So I know it's not overcharged.. Any ideas? Any feedback will be much appreciated. Thank you.

Well, by design they are supposed to. lol It should cycle on and off as the a/c is on. If not eventually the compressor will probably seize up. The outer pulley on the compressor will always spin, but the clutch in the middle of the compressor should cycle on and off.

it wont cycle off till the car is cold as balls then, just like a house window a/c, when the room gets cold the Thermostat turns off the compressor. so if your a/c is set to 60, and its not 60 inside the car, it wont turn off.

i always have my windows cracked open so its never turning off for me. and works just fine, ice cold air.

The blue guy is right, the AC clutch will turn on and off, because thats the way they work. Just because it turns off, doesnt mean the cold air stops flowing.

Yes, it turns off when I turn the a/c off, it's just not cycling like it is supposed to while the a/c is on.. The cluth just stays engaged the whole time until I turn the a/c off

Also I forgot to mention the Clutch also disengaged when I pulled the relay, so I know the relay is working correctly also

It could also be the fact that it didnt work before because it had no R-134a in there and after only adding a little to get it going, its still not up to proper specs and pressures and thus the computer thinks its gotta keep going.

I'd personally take it somewhere and have them do a simple AC system check, and see if there is a problem somewhere. Then if non are present fill with the proper amount of R-134a and then all should be good.

Most places do cheap system checks this time of year.
