Its not the exact same thing. One click back and i get just radio and windows. one click forward i get like 10 dash lights, an active pcm (that i can pull codes from) and a primed fuel pump. one click forward uses more battery then one click back
moving on, since you said you were able to do it at least once before, i'd guess the switch is the issue. it should require minimal effort with no extra step (like pressing the brake pedal) to turn the key backwards. Unless you're wheel is pressed right up agaisnt the steering wheel lock; then you might try turning it the opposite way just a tad then turning the key backwards..
