I'm doing one right now. The fabrication part isn't too bad if you have the skills or know someone who can. 3800 flywheel $100 machining $50, clutch $one arm and leg, finding the correct oil filter adapter $might as well look for the fountain of youth, aluminum oil pan and bracket $100, shifter assembly $find one in a junkyard. It's not an easy endeavor, but I've got the car off the road and will hopefully have it done the beginning of summer.

IDC, and no one else does.

Why are forums not allowed to provide direct links elsewhere?

    Thats just counter intuitive.

    Poopy here!

Two identical cars with identical drivers. One with a getraped or ragged or whatever and the other with a 4T65E-HD/shift kit. The manual looses every time, hands down. What's more, the more you do to the auto the faster your car gets.

I can't believe this 1960's philosophy has hung around this long. Step into the 21st century my friend.

I don't have any problem with these "novelty" mods and in fact I'm very interested in this thread for that. But when someone makes the "manual is better than auto" claim, well, it just burns my breeches.

There is a possibility that I might even jump in and try this some day.

I never said manual was better or that auto sucks. I got my 5 speed swap dirt cheap....much cheaper than a built trans would cost me. The 5 speed will hold more power stock vs a stock 4T65e-HD. Also, I really do enjoy driving the 5 speed. I know auto can shift faster and is more repeatable, but my car isn't a track built vehicle. In fact, it'll probably never see the track. I think the OP might be in it for the same novelty as well. Also, if you've never driven a Getrag 284 car, it shifts so smooth. LOL

    I lol'd.

Tell that to the pile of 6 broken 5speeds, and 3 exploded clutches, laying in my fiero buddies backyard. He has spent 3-4k keeping the dream alive running in the mid/high 11s... I ran 10s on a stock 65e... On the highway he would edge me out a bit but only after he had spent alot of time and money on the R and D work to get it to do that.... I never bothered turning the boost up a bit to keep up with him, and after I put a built trans in I could shift harder... so I eventually walked him on the highway at the same boost level I had on the stock trans.

282... But the clutch issues still remain in the 284.... If you can setup the reverse throw crap.

I heard about the clutch issues, but hoping I can figure them out easily. The 282 in the Fiero was weaker and due to the way the engine is in there, the 3800 would put a lot of extra stress on it. Ever try to spin tires going straight in reverse? That's how the 282 felt in that Fiero. LOL

it's breaking due to the abuse of the driver beating the SNOT out of it

i'm about having something different (only a handful of manual g-p's out there)

i'm not making a 10sec 5speed fwd g-p, i just want something "custom" with a little extra power than a N-A 3800, TOP SWAP is happening

i do like that 6 speed swap

And cost goes through the roof.

A 5 speed swap would be pretty cool but I wouldn't want to go through the headache. I've always wanted a 1st gen GTP to play with just for the motor and drivetrain.
