Help please. Exhaust issue

Wasn't sure where to put this thread, thought it might belong here.

So today I realize my exhaust sounded kinda weird. So I did a little investigating and found out there's a hole in the back of my resonator. The hole isn't very big, but you can see exhaust escapes from there.

So I'm wondering what the best way to fix it would be. Should I buy a replacement or try and plug it?

EDIT: I'm anticipating I'll get a response that says "just replace it with pipe". I don't really want to go that route. From what I have heard/seen I'll just end up with a bunch of rasp. I would like to keep my exhaust rasp-free.

My question is how good of quality are the replacements? Walker sells one pretty cheap but on some sites they say its aluminum, and others say it's steel. I don't want to have to do this again in like 3 years, so I want

something that will hold up in the Michigan winters with all of the wonderful salt.

I guess another option could be just replacing the whole cat-back. But I have to look more into that. I'm not sure if I'll like the way it sounds.

walker replacements are good.

or a factory replacement.

or even a 30in long glasspack will do the trick, it does exactly what a res does.

i made this res out of a glass pack, cost 20 bucks for the glass pack, 10 for a flange, and 10 to have the inlet/outlet tube cut off and a flange welded on. i went 32 inched for length.

if you have a stock EXHAUST you will have to have ie welded in place. my exhaust was all after market and was clamped in.

if you look up a walker res, it looks just like what i have made here, (they cost 100 bucks in hand.) and it sounds nice and quiet, like stock.

oh, and its a ton easier to just drop the whole exhaust from the cat back to the muffler/ or mufflers, (it hung up by rubber hangers, thats it) if you are clamped together, it your running the stock exhaust you may need a shop to cut the old one out and weld in the new one. some mom and pop shops will put in what you bring them others will not. the 2 shops i went to wanted 275 to replace my shot res. thieves!

this is how i got my shot res off. i cut 3 lines in the res outlet tube with a cut off wheel, just score it and pry the tube back.

thanks guys. I gotta head back up to college so I'm gonna just patch it for now and try and get it fixed in the next week or 2. My exhaust is stock and I don't have a welder so I'm gonna have to look for a shop that will put in what I give them.

i used to have a shop that was performance minded, they would do what ever you wanted to do, no questions asked. and they were fair with you price wise. now closed, bummer.

the 2 shops i went to, i asked if they could slap a glass pack in there instead of the replacement res, both told me we dont have anything like that here...i was like really? and left. i did buy the flange from one of them shops tho, so im thinking they just want to rape my wallet. and thats the only place i could find the flange, or the net, (pep boys and auto zone just dont carry flanges) but i'd rather have it in had to make sure it fits right.

oh i bought the gasket first for a stock res to cat, took that to the muffler shop and matched it up to the flanges they had, 2.5 inside diameter.

but if you let a shop take care of it all they should have everything in stock, maybe bring them the glass pack if they dont carry them.

shop around, and then shop around some more.

oh and none of that patch your muffler stuff works for any length of time, i did it to mine, and it lasted like 2 days, or till you jump on it, then is all loud again. waste of time and money in the long run.

I didnt even buy a flang I just cut pipe and flange off old res and clamped in into the new glasspack.

my stock pipe from the cat was not round, none of the factory pipes are where they have bends. so the new flange was a easy way to keep it simple. unless you do a U bend delete then the pipe would fit right.



you would need the u bend cut off and new pipe welded to the cat with a o2 bung installed.
