Ive received so much valuable advice. This problem might be from both advised repairs needing looked at.The problem it is having is that it will run fine, maybe a little hard, and out of the blue the RPM gauge will shoot down to zero(there is kinda thump or surge just before it does this).I can usually continue to drive and of course once the car is shut off and restarted the RPM gauge is back to normal.Ive been advised this would be the result of a bad crank sensor(crank shaft sensor same thing?)Ok then the other problem it has is at lower speed, usually stopping, starting,or turning a corner it has been shutting off.Doesnt do this alot, but more frequently.Ive been told by a few, including billboast this could be a vacuum line thing and that all vacuum lines should be checked.Today both of these problems converged at the same time, had the surge, rpms shot down to zero, proceeded to stop light,as it turned green and i started to turn, car cut off.Had hard time steering to stop as i guess the power steering stops when car shuts off like that.Once stopped i crank it starts right up and no more problem for the few miles home.Is this two seperate problems?

Check engine lights help...as in if the car is throwing any codes.

Bouncing tach sounds like a crank positioning sensor...

Vac leaks are common...and you can get the entire set from your local dealer...probably needs replacing anyways since all these cars suffer from dry rot.

that one is unlikely to leak since it is a fairly hefty, rubber line. the rest are small and get brittle when aged.

Any auto parts store will read them for free.

Just drive it up there...get home...get on google and search the codes you got followed by Grand Prix...

It'll probably pull up something Bill has typed up on here, knowing him...lol.

Actually when i first got the car i did take it to ADVANCE AUTO to have codes read.Young guy came out with his little machine and within seconds told me he couldnt read codes cause my port was damaged or something.I had one guy tell me this is BS that its probably because their machines dont read the older cars.

Ummm, if the port is damaged then yeah it wouldn't read the codes...but...it is most likely user error since most places don't have parts people worth a sh1t.

And if the SES light is on, it'll read the code...doesn't matter on how long it has been there.
