This is a Intake I installed today. Its not nearly the best product, but it was affordable, as I will not be able to purchase the wizaired any time soon. This is a sprectre filter (Pep Boys....). It was cheaper than the K&N, and im not sure if I like it. The appearance is nice, but I dont think this setup is very good.

It seems to me like a hot air intake. Although I do get a very nice Whining noise from it. To be honest I feel a loss of power vs the stock box with a drop in K&N.

I could return the filter (hehe) and get a bigger K&N filter, but initially when I purchased this, I thought the quality is not a huge difference.

All in all, I think I actually feel a loss in power. I think this is due to the hot air that is being circulated. What do you guys think? Ditch this setup? Use it? Upgrade it?

I have gotten the idea for this intake from this picture:

Im sorry to use that picture because the vehicle has been in a very unfortunate accident, but I do like the intake setup.

    Heres my setup:

^^^^ Does this PCM look mounted right? It doesnt move in inch. Been strapped in with twisti ties

That is a Hot Air Intake. You need to have the filter sealed off to keep out engine bay heat. The HAI will hurt performance but help mileage. The CAI is vice versa.

Those look like zip ties, not twistie ties.

For those who run intercoolers, the HAI is a good idea as it's the least restriction and the air is being cooled by the intercooler anyway.

For the rest of us, not so good as the warmer air is less dense which means less fuel is mixed with it = less power.

From the looks of it, it doesnt seem like you guys are telling me its a very bad idea. I like that!

But, I do think the performance has decreased with this intake vs the stock box. I will get some tubing and extend it. Ill stop by the hardware store to get a fitting.

It's not a very bad idea, but we aren't saying it's a good idea either.

I ran a similar intake and yes you are losing HP. But, I some awesome gas mileage with that type of setup.

Ive ran that type of intake and an SLP intake and I much prefer the HAI over the SLP box. That said, I have not tried any other type of intake, but everyone is correct that it does help with fuel economy.

Well both the K&N and paper filters are surface type filters. Given that the K&N can let go of its tacky oil and gum up your MAF, the paper one, in this case would perform better. Additionally, to get the flow that K&N has, they skimped on filtration and therefore the paper would also win out on dirt stopping ability.

Actually its not a paper cone. Its cotton. The filter can be cleaned as a K&N filter can be. But im not trying to back this filter up or say its the same quality as K&N. I have always ran K&N and I know that K&N filters are much more higher quality than this one. Im actually doing this intake for fun and really don't have the money to spend on a high quality setup as far as top of the line products.

Today I am returning this filter and going to purchase a smaller cone. Im going to stop by the hardware store and try to extend the cone into the fender wall as much as safely possible. Possibly even see if they have something where I could block off some of the engine heat. Im going to try to stay away from any wood or fairly easy flammable material. I will see what they offer.

Ill try to get some pics if I can get around to it today.

    Thanks for all the input!

I was originally gonna' go with the wizair for my Gp, but after seeing and reading about yours, and how cheap it was to make, I decided to give it a try, and mind you, up until yesterday, I had never done anything to a car more complex than an oil and air filter change. After spending about forty-three dollars at home depot and auto zone, I returned to my driveway and went to work, and sure enough, in all of about thirty minutes of work, my custon CAI was complete. When I went to take it for a test drive, I was nervous as hell, because for one reason or another, things always seem to go wrong for me on big projects like that, but after about two hours of driving, my temp gauge was actually slightly lower, my average econ. was on the rise, the sound of my supercharger was amplified, I had no check engine lights, and most importantly, I felt more top end power!!! Thank You!

if your crafty. you can take the piping into the fenderwall and curve it down into the fender. that way it gets it completly away from the engine bay. a little easier then trying to build a barrier to protect it from engine heat

    Alright!!

After about an hour at the hardware store and a few returns, I now have a much better install!! The cone is halfway in the fenderwall and is covered. Smaller cone too. I just went for a test drive and it is like night and day. Now I have the whining with a little power increase.

Stay tuned for pictures a little later this evening!

with the series III engine like I have there is the MAF sensor to deal with, its a PITA, I'm trying to figure out the proper way to mount the filter to the MAF then to the throttle body with the wizair box and have the filter sit inside the wizair nicely
