I was driving the other day and my 00' Regal GS started to spit and sputter just a few miles after I put some fuel in. After another mile or so after the first notice of an issue, it died and left me stranded. It starts right back up everytime, but immediatly dies. The only way to keep it running is to start it and hold the pedal to the floor. Once I hit the rev limiter, it will stay running as long as im around 3500rpm's or higher. I disconnected the MAF and tried it with and without, the EGR, with and without. I checked all plugs wires and coils, but it was not missing when I was keeping it at a high RPM to keep it running, I switched the fuel relay with another relay with the same #, I checked for all vacuum leaks and the map sensor.....all to no avail. Im guessing the fuel pump is so weak, that the only way to keep it running is to floor it. I CAN hear the fuel pump whine when I turn the ignition. It has a fuel fliter with 10k on it, so not the worst, but its ready for replacement. Strainer and pump have 174k on it. car only runs on 93 octane unless im at the track. The engine has been modded fairly well, so maybe she just went out. Here are my guesses....fuel pump, both relays bad??, fuel pressure regulator....hence the reason for having to keep it at high rpm's???, CPS??, TPS, strainer and of course the fuel filter, but I doubt this because its getting fuel and running without hesitation when in high Rpms.
    Thanks

It does sound like the fuel pump could be going bad. I'd run a pressure test to be sure.

Thought I would add this as well, car is throwing no codes of any sort, and the tacometer is functioning. Also, the car does not die right away, it sputters after letting out of the accelerator/high rpm's for about three or so seconds, then it dies.

Also, if it is the fuel pump, I found one on my local CL thats a new AC DELCO, part #MU227. According to what im finding at my local online parts stores, the GTP and my GS, both a 2000 model and obviously with the same l67 motor, have different part #'s indicating 2 different fuel pumps????Am I reading this correctly? I thought they were the same??

Couldnt find any. I sprayed brake cleaner all over and couldnt get it to hesitate any while someone held the rpm's at 3500 +

i dont think brake cleaners the way to go, i used carb and choke cleaner, while at idle, spray around the engine, listen for the idle to jump up when you find a leak.

I've just used my ears - I can usually spot them by the loud noise they make.

I've had several - mostly broken vac/tee fittings.

Im pretty sure its not a vac leak, and brake cleaner serves well for vac leak purposes.

Were you able to check your fuel pressure?`

Check to see if the fuel pump resistor has gone out.

Mine just did. Car will start, run for a second, then die.
I can keep it running if I keep the RPM's up, but it will not idle.

    Troubleshooting guide

Check to see if it will run without the resistor and the line straight shorted. It's worth a try.

I'd check the resistor, although yours didn't fail in the "typical" way. It's worth bending one pin on a relay to know for sure.

If it's not that..it really sounds like all this freaky warm/cold/warm/freezing/hot/cold weather may have put some condensation in the fuel tanks at your station. I'd pop a can of dry gas in and see if that helps.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

I will check the resistor by bending the tab....and a can of dry heat sure wont hurt. Does anyone know if the fuel pumps are the same in the GS and the GTP. All the websites show a diff number. I was just wondering why??

I only know that when I called on a pump for my 00 GS I was told that there were two versions used in 00 GS. So you had to pop the cover on the hatch and see what the sticker said or run it through your dealer via vin number
