Thread: Wheel hop

I don't want to wait for RA - I want to get it done this weekend.

RA is about $90/ea while checker is about $135. For the extra $90, I will get it done this weekend. Also, Advanced won't price match to online retailers, only B&M stores.

Here are the LCA's removed - you can see each front bushing was trashed:

The guys said they only match brick and mortar store pricing.

That's good because Checker (who doesn't have them) is about $40 cheaper.

$136/ea is the moog price. Wanted them as they have metal ball joints.

So, I have completely new LCA's, new Dorman front stabilizer with MOOG links/bushings, new quick struts, I've confirmed my CV's are perfect and bearings are also fine.

I still get wheel hop.

It's only very slightly better with the new LCA's (which also included new ball joints, new bushings et al).

Bottom line: wtf is causing this?

I am still thinking it's just the tires...

The outside treads on both are almost completely bald. I'm getting new tires pretty soon, but not as a result of this.

Is there anything else I could be missing?

I just had an alignment done...didn't affect hop one way or the other.

Granted, the damage to the tires is done (they're very unevenly worn).

The weird thing is that the wear pattern would suggest a camber issue. But, the tire that's balder than Mr. Clean needed no camber adjustment.

Now that I think about it....I don't know if I had wheel hop issues with any other tires. Maybe this set has weird friction characteristics.

Okay, before I dump $600 into new tires...

I want to try and confrirm it's not my transmission.

I just drained the ATF and replaced about 2 weeks ago. This had no effect on the hopping. And, the fluid (before and after change) were not burnt and smelled perfect (no burn smell or stink like smoked clutch packs).

When I romp on the gas, the front tires both smoke. The performance of the tranny otherwise is perfect - shifting etc is fine.

The reason I worry it might be something slipping (or something like that) within my transmission is that I can get mild wheel hopping @ 1/2 throttle.

So - any other checks I should do on my tranny before getting new tires?

The driver's side trans mount is fine - I don't know where the others are and haven't looked that hard tbh.

Thanks for the tip - I've been under my car a lot lately - I've checked every bolt I can think of including subframe connections etc.

The tires are indeed very bald on the outer portion and near perfect on the interior portion. I attributed this to a camber issue, but I'm not so sure...
