I didn't know our cars had steering gears. I know there is a steering rack.

Likely your diagnoser needs to clarify their diagnosis of the issue. Not sure how we can help beyond telling you it might be a rack, tie rod or a bad guess on the diagnoser's part.

Soooo it is Never heard it referred to as that.

Googled it, found the part number with a picture. Picture is of what we would all call a rack. which splains it. They gave you the "technical" name for it.

W STEERING GEAR ASM (NV7,NV8); W STEERING GEAR ASM (NV8); W STEERING GEAR ASM POWER; W STEERING GEAR ASM POWER(NV7); WB,WF STEERING GEAR ASM POWER; WB,WF,WY STEERING GEAR ASM POWER;. Fits: Century, Grand , Intrigue, Regal | Nalley Buick GMC Brunswick

The part number points to the whole rack assembly. I think it's technical name is steering gear per the illustration and decription.

if you feel like saving 750 bucks heres the how to, for rack removal,http://www.grandprixforums.net/04_rack_replacement.php

i got a used rack for 75 bucks, most junk yards want 100 to 125 for them, it took about 4 hours to do, start to finish, its not that its so hard to as the bolts are in some what tight areas, but well worth saving all that money if you feel this is something you can do yourself. i think in all its 17 bolts, 10 of witch are lug nuts for the tires lol

in that case ill let you know that you dont need to remove the master cylinder, or the air box like it says in the write up. you can get the power steering lines from underneath the driver side of the car, bolts on the lines are 18 mm line wrench. drop the back of the cradle 2 to 3 inches for extra room, you'll need it.

and dont spin the steering wheel around, lock the wheel and leave it alone, if the wheel is spun the clock spring will break and then the air bag light will come on.

i also locked my steering wheel with the wheels straight, also when you unbolt the tie rods, leave the old jam nuts on. when i got mine out i laid the old and new one up side by side, i tried to match everything up, the way the nub comes out of the top of the rack to the steering shaft, get that as close as possible, makes getting the new rack to line up so much easier, and try to match up the jam nuts for the tie rods as well, the shop told me i was damn close when i went in for alignment.

i also de greased the whole engine, trans, and under side of the car, i put the car up on ramps and had at it, clean cars make happy mechanics.

you wont believe whats under there till your arms deep into black grim every where.
