Rod knock would be a wee bit louder than the bearings in the blower.
87 K miles on the bottom end.
Checked out Evap vent solenoid and the injectors, not the cause.
The motor sounds significantly louder and deeper when the valve cover breather is off.
Sounds to be at the rate that the valves open.
Where it's louder when the valve cover breather is off, you hear it more coming from the hole, or in general the engine is louder. And X2 for Vid.
Ummm...you got lifters on the way out? They like to clatter.
Need an oil change?![]()
thats exactly where i was getting ready to get at. but if ur bottom has 87 K how much does the top end have?Ummm...you got lifters on the way out? They like to clatter.

Matt.. title doesn't say it all. I've been waiting on you to fill in some of the needed details for us to diagnose it.
Like..what is in it? Comp lifters are loud. Any issues..what are your mods.
You know the drill.
My car be mostly stock.
Top swap, headers, intercooler.
Heads are of unknown mileage.
Stock lifters, pushrods, rockers, comp bolts torqued to 25 ft lbs. Cleaned threads out with qtip, used ARP fastener lube.
tried swapping rockers, no change.
Motor is louder and sounds deeper when the breather is off and it is given a small rev.
Put screwdriver to evap solenoid, not the correct frequency.
Put screwdriver to injectors, possibly correct frequency, seems too fast, but overall very quiet. Could be one loud one... Will swap and see.
Noise is only on front bank near cylinder 5.
Screwdriver to rocker pedestal, only heard bearing noise.
The valve springs appear to be moving at precisely the correct frequency.
To be frank, I can hardly hear it over the bearing noise from the blower.
Oil is M1 5w30 with 800 Km on it.
Was changed at 2000 Km the time before that.
Possibly try some 10w-40...since this summer has been a VERY hot one...oil breakdown could be premature under hotter instances.
If it quiets down then that is the easiest diagnosis ever. The 3800 has a noisey, clattery, valvetrain...it's common really. Which is why I always put in 5 quarts every oil change and by the time I go to change it...there is the recommended 4.5 in there...which is about normal wear and breakdown. That quieted down the silver car by A LOT.
I've never heard a loud injector on a 3800, just a vehicle with DI, not your everyday MPFI, or FI. Also...with the breather off the motor will be a little louder because it isn't on there to muffle the internal noises.
Have you yanked the plugs to check their condition as well? Just to rule out WCS...ya know.
Ya my valvetrain is kinda noisy too. The Camaro was bad. But it had 193,000 on the stock motor and wasn't taken care of at all.
Plugs look fine.
Did you just do a rebuild, when did this noise start? Sounds like the valves in a Honda. I'd try changing the oil like Blue said and check it for any metal.
It's made this noise since may of 2010. Top swapped it then.
You can hardly hear it when the hoods closed.
When driving, inaudible.
As well...you can always try changing out the rockers, valve springs, and put roller rockers in there. Rollers made my car so much quieter with new lifters/locks/seals and springs.
Can I vote with Monkey?
If so...
Boom.
if ur miles are unknown on those heads, you need to pull the valave covers and check the conditions or springs, rockers, and even push rods. i had a jeep grand cherokee with the inline 6 that someone didnt do the routine oil change on and there was soooooooo much sludge build up and the lack of oil pressure caused one of the push rods to actually burn a hole through the rocker and then the one next to that was broken in half believe it or not. that knock was only slightly louder than yours and when i say slightly i mean not much but same thing happened when you revved it the knock got faster. so yeah id check that out. whatever it is, doesnt sound good. do you have any misfire codes or anything to set your check engine light on?
BPS...he used all of the factory lower end components...such as the pushrods and lifters during his Top Swap...so all of that stuff is his factory parts. Heads...yes...if you just yanked some heads and used them Matt...then well...yeeeeaaaaaaaaaaah
