This ONLY happens in the first three feet of driving, each time the car is started. It never happens during driving.

When I put the car into drive and idle forward, regardless of whether I'm turning or straight-on, an audible "BRRR" or "GRRRUNT" emanates from the front of the car. I am pretty sure I can "feel" something at the same time.

Like I said, this does not happen during any other driving situation. No turning, no accelerating, no nothing while these are happening.

    Any one have any notions?

Perfectly normal. I believe it is the ABS system check.
My 2000 Blazer dod it, and also my 2000 GTP.

Mine too. The first time I heard it I swore it sounded like metal on metal and got a little nervous.

    Woohoo!

Thanks, doods. Before I read this, I had an inkling it might have been ABS related. I considered removing both ABS fuses under the hood to check, but I'm glad I read this first to save me the "trouble".

Fact: I ran my 1998 Tahoe w/ the ABS fuse removed for three years, to avoid replacing the unit. Besides, I like to be in control. I'll be different w/ this car!
