Thread: A/C questions

I have a 2004 GP GT2. How much refrigerant does the A/C hold? I need to top it off (not cooling all that well and the compressor doesn't shut off). There don't appear to be any leaks (has UV dye in it and the only place there is any is where it got on the valve on the low pressure side) so I need to add some. I added one 12 oz can of refrigerant w/ sealant in it-- not much change. I just don't want to add too much and have it work worse/lock up the compressor. The compressor whirs fairly loudly now as well.

When topping of the A/C, is it a good idea to add a can of oil too? I haven't had occasion to do anything with a/c on a vehicle (never had one with a/c issues before) but am fairly mechanically inclined. I've done things like LIM gasket on a Grand AM 3.4L, plenum pan on a Dodge Ram 360, various suspension stuff, starters, hubs, wheel bearings, shocks, valve covers, etc. Charging an a/c shouldn't be a problem :P

1.- a lable under the hood says how much the system holds
2.- does the compressor run all the time?, like when you turn the a/c on and off
3.- how many miles are on it?, if theres alot of miles then it could just be time for a new compressor
4.- no you should not have to add any oil to the system, theres already some mixed in with the 12oz

Since you are not starting with an evacuated system, you can't just say add X ounces of R134 since you don't know how much you have to start with. Get a pressure gauge that hooks to the low and high pressure side so you can monitor the pressure while you fill it. That will be the safest way to make sure you don't overfill it.

You honestly probably wouldve been better off draining the remaining freon so that you know how much to add. Most freons have oil in them, at least the stuff I use does. I use Arctic Freeze Synthetic.

Bremmer Kraft BR05. ASA makes the same wheel, but I forget the model #.

What size and color do you have? Tire size too?

I found the sticker-- looks like 2.3 lbs. The compressor is only on when the A/C button is depressed (or it's in defrost, etc.) so that part works. It was about 80 yesterday, and I hooked up the gauge that came with the can of freon and it said 30ish PSI when running. Is that low?

The car has 96,000 miles on it.
