Ok, here is a strange one. I work out of town weekly and since I have a rental for my job, I haven't driven my Grand Prix much. I started it every 3-4 weeks just to keep things running alright. Well, last month I went to start it and found that the battery had gone dead. I assume it is the winter weather in Michigan. I tried to open the door so I could get it out and charge it, but the key doesn't open the door. Apparently it is only for the ignition. Have I just gotten screwed by the dealership (I bought it used)? Is there another way to get the hood open so I can get the battery out?

    Thanks,
    Scott

What year is it? I know for a fact 97+ use the same key for the door and the ignition. If it's not working in one, then it's not a factory key, and is a bad cut...
Best idea for now? Call a locksmith, have him pop the door open, don't lock it again until you have a new key.

Also, you sure its the battery in the car, and not the one in the remote? If the car won't open you really wouldn't be able to tell...

Edit: Yeah I think your key is a nasty cut, because if you have a remote, no way your car is going to have separate keys for the door and the ignition...

Buy a Jimmy, they should be around $20 and most pawn shops seem to have em.

All good suggestions. Never thought of the locks being changed. The two keys I have are both GM keys, so they came from the dealership, but that doesn't mean there isnt something wrong with them.

The easiest would be to get the 2nd key and see if that works (hope). I'll go from there.

    Thanks,

Yeah, as said already, door is the same key as the ignition on that year so my first guess is the ignition was changed and the doors weren't. That would totally suck to discover after the fact.

You can unlock with a slim jim unless they changed the lock stuff for the 04's. I used to work as a fabricator and in my 03 I somehow locked my keys in the car. The one guy has used these before and said we can easily make one. We used the metal straps that come on palettes and hold the sheet sheet down. Cut a 3 foot piece and on the one end make an angled notch in it. It sure worked and now I carry it with my and helped a few people get in their cars.

I know the 97 to 03's dont have a blocker plate but not sure about the o4's. But you slip it down by the handle going towards the back and pull up. It took a few tries and I dont know what im hooking onto but it works. Kind of beats a hangar because you dont have to try pulling the door away and fishing it down. Or just buy one as one suggestion was already said.
