Thread: Heater Problems

I have been battling heating problems since I bought this car a few years ago. During my test drive I noticed the temp gauge was up a little higher than it should and the heater control knob would only work on 3,5, & 5. So had the dealership fix those problems before I brought the car home.

About a year ago my heater control would only work on control 5. Kinda just dealt with it because I planned on pulling my dash out and painting so figured I would wait to fix it since I was told the high control was a default on cars and would never go out. Well yesterday driving to work it quit working altogether, in the dead of winter, awesome!!

So anyone have any ideas on what it would be and how to fix it? Ive repaired some blower boxes and stuff on trucks but those are on the outside firewall and fairly easy. Got a feeling this is going to be a ***** lol

I would check the fuses first. If those check out ok then maybe the blower motor resistor is toast.

I havent even dicked with it yet. In the process of moving, working overtime, and cold ass weather kinda sucks. I checked the fuses and they were fine so im thinkn im going to have to pull the dash. Cant wait for that

the resister sould be on the pass side behind the glove box, no need to tare the dash apart.

Please don't listen to them, lol... Get yourself a manual. It will save you tons of headache and actually give you the right info for stuff.

I took the glove box and the black trim behind that out, then started looking for it and noticed it was behind the blower motor. It sucks cuz one bolt for the blower motor is behind a group of wires you cant move. So I need to go get a bending ratchet extension to get to it and then hope theres not a 4th in the back cuz I def wont be able to get to that one. The resistor itself is right on the firewall, behind the blower motor incase anyone else reads this. So far its a pain in my ass and really just wanna pay a shop to do it lol. Gonna go get my tool and get back on it. Post l8er tonight and see if I can fix it.

You have to take the blower motor off first tho and thats whats holding me back. I dont have a tool that will bend into place to get one of the bolts out

Well to anyone who has this problem then listen up. If your heater only works on certain levels like 3, 4, &5, then only works on 5 and finally goes out then your heater resistor went out. It is an easy fix as long as you have bendable ratchet extensions or a snake like device for a ratcheting device. I didnt have the tools to get to the bolts so took it to a shop. Now I got the glove box and other dash parts taken off and two of the bolts out of the blower motor before hand and also bought the part from autozone for $35. The shop got it done in 30 min and only charged me $35, so I spent $70 to fix the problem.

If you look online at repair topics on this you will get different answers to replacing this but I can tell you on the 01 body style you will need to do the following:

take of glovebox
remove plastice trim and fuse cover
pull off lower carpet trim and full back the carpet
take off the blower motor and spin it to make sure it is still good as well
take out the resistor which you only take out one bolt and loosen two others because the holes are slotted, then unclip the wiring

After that you just replace with the new one and work your way back
