Have a rather stupid (well maybe not so stupid) question. My brother has a 1999 Regal GSE (not sure what the "E" stands for). He was told the original motor destroyed itself and was replaced with a 2004 Chevrolet Impala SS Indianapolis 500 3800 Series II L67.

The dealership ran the numbers on the motor to tell him exactly what the motor came out of. I am not sure if he recieved the transmission from that car as well but here is the situation.

His car will not shift into Overdrive. Now I have not driven the car yet to see for myself just exaclty what is going on. Does the ECM have or hold the electronic controls for the transmission?

I am not sure what the problem is and have thought perhaps I could get a 50 dollar ECM off of Ebay to perhaps test it out and see if the control is having issues.

Also my brother thinks his head gaskets are going bad in his car which most people already know that doesnt happen all that often. He has a coolant leak between the intake manifold and the heads, or perhaps the plastic elbow, he was told that the LIM gaskets were changed to the second design. I asked him what color the gaskets were and he said they look black. I told him that the second design are made of aluminum and would not look black unless they were dirty. So i am going to assume he has the first design and perhaps they were not changed out. Where else could coolant be coming from?

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

An S2 L67 is an S2 L67 to the computer. That likely is not your issue. There is a very common issue in these transmissions called the 4th gear clutch hub. The splines on them were not hardened until/after 2003. And because the trans is not easily interchangeable, your brothers car probably has it's original transmission.

On the first/second design and aluminum gasket or not, please see the below info.. He can have plastic and second design.

A question was asked and I figured I'd toss this out in the open as well for general info to all.
When ordering LIM gaskets on the 3800, there are two listings.
    First design w/o locating pins
    Second design with locating pins
Soooo what's a locating pin right? On the second design there are two rubber pins on the rubber end seals of the LIM gasket set. 96-97 year engine blocks are technically are the first design w/o pins. 98+ are second design blocks. The difference is not worthy of having two different sets of gaskets. IMO the second design should have superceded the first and only one version should be available as the pins and their function is minimal at best.
96-97 engine block. Look at the top and bottom of the picture at the block. See the solid line of the block from head to head. That's the first design w/o any holes for locating pins to sit into.

98+ engine block. Look at the left and right ends of the block. See the two holes on each end. These are where the locating pins sit into.

When putting second design gaskets on a 96-97 block the pins simply lay over the side and still do the job of holding the gasket in place before the LIM is put back on.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

I would guess than getting the transmission fixed will be the only way to really go then?

I am going to get the aluminum LIM gaskets because I am sick of changing them out of my cars. I changed my wife's L32 LIM gaskets and they were fine for a month or two and now I smell coolant in the exhaust and I notice I am burning it up pretty good.

I put the aluminum gaskets in my 98 Grand Prix L32 and it seems to be holding up so far.

Thanks for getting back to me about this issue.

If you changed the LIM's and a month later suspect them of leaking...something went very wrong on the install. Maybe the coolant o-rings or TB gasket. Usually though the plastic LIM's don't leak enough into the cylinders that it's an issue.

Well I wouldnt say something went wrong, I fixed the car over 10 months ago and its been fine since. I am sure something did go wrong, what it was exactly I am not sure. I rushed to get the job done mostly because I felt I had to have it done for work the next day.

When I get back from the mainland I am going to work on the car again and then sell the 2002 Regal LS. We have enough cars right now and shipping it really isnt worth it to me. I will say this the body is clean and in awesome shape. The paint looks new, the AC works well and the cup holders.....lets just say PRISTINE!

    Thanks for your help...
