My daughter bought the car from my Aunt who is the original owner, so we are second owners. The car died while she was driving it doing bout 35mph. Had it checked out and mechanic said needs a Timing belt. What are the chances the valves may be bent? It is a 95,, 3.4 DOHC 51,000 Miles on the car.. ,, and heard the interference motor came out in 96? Looking to sell the car either running or not because my daughter needs a small SUV for college as they get alot of snow in the winter. Is it worth spending the money to fix and how much do you think it should cost? Have pics of car if anyone interested

I dont think the 3.4 was an interference engine. Having a shop do it it would probably be like $500-800.

Well I did a little research for ya, the 3.4l is not an interference engine so you should be fine replacing the timing chain.

"One final work, while the 3.4L is not designed as an interference engine, it has happened that when the timing belt breaks or slips, the pistons can hit the valves. ther is only .010" designed clearance between the valve at full lift and the piston at top dead center. That is how my GP was when I got it. 6 bent valves, timing belt broken." Quote from the article THE 3.4 DOHC 24 VALVE

Ao if it happened during low RPM normal driving Id say you're fine

Just to give an update ! The valves were NOT bent,, and the 1995 3.4 DOHC is Not an interference motor. Had the timing belt replaced along with few other things ( tension pulley ) and the car runs great once again Just figure I let people know and it cost me $950. and he was a friend who did it. Had one garage quoted me estimate of $1300. Very happy with it or should say my daughter is, Hope this helps other people

I had a Lumina Z34 about 8 years ago with the same motor. The timing belt snapped while I was WOT and there were no bent valves. Glad to hear your outcome was the same. Back then I wasn't too good at wrenching as it was my first car, and the job cost $1000.
