Say that the hood cable were broken/disconnected...how would you go about getting the hood open?

    A sledge hammer.

Sorry, had to. The fact is Im not really sure. You may be able to drop out the lower air dam and get up in there to the hood latch but Im not sure. I know this has been discussed before so maybe someone will stop in here and give you some assistance.

Do you remember which grill? Or any description of what the "ring looks like? Thanks, I am hoping this is less painful than I imagine it.

either grill and the ring is just a 1/4 inch piece that the cable goes into, very easy (when I did it the alarm was set and it didn't go off until the plunger activated it)

97/98 did not have the vent tubes.... so you were able to reach your finger in under the latch system and move the latch mechanism over to where the hood would pop. (very bottom)

on the newer models...I am not sure if you are able to get to it from the bottom of the car. or if your able to move the plastic vent tube out of the way on either side...you would be able to get to the bottom of the latch.

To update, I did get the hood open. I pulled both of the grills. I went in the passenger side grill with a screwdriver, then fed it across to the other side. I used my right hand to align the screwdriver with the latch, then pushed the screwdriver and popped the hood. It could have been a lot worse! The latch is towards the front, so if you have the snorkels you will need to run your hand/screwdriver as far forward as you can, which is actually the back of the snorkel.
