Ok, so i have replaced the power steering pump 3 times now, rebuilt unit from autozone, each time i have properly bled the system turning left to right, etc. Its full on fluid each pump and it makes noise constantly, and whines more under acceleration when wheel is turned. My question is has anyone had this problem, and could it be something with the rack and pinion causing the pump to make noise? The rack is not leaking, and i dont know what is the matter with the pumps i am getting, do you think that its just a crappy rebuilt unit and i should complain and get my money back? Any input appriciated. Thanks.

MAKE SURE!!! that the power steering lines are NOT touching anything!!!!!! even a little rub will make the system ungodly loud.

I had the same problem with rebuilt pumps. A bad rack can cause the pump to fail, but I don't think it will make noise right away. Turn the wheel from side to side, and see if you can feel the rack binding or sticking. I took mine to the dealership, and they checked out the rack for free.

If the rack is fine, new pumps from GM are $172 (I've seen them cheaper online). For the record, I got charged $200 for a reman pump (dumb, but I learned my lesson).

yea it makes a constant dull whine, not really high pitched, but when you turn the wheel left or right under acc. it makes a higher pitched whine. I think im gonna call autozone and tell them to switch me to a different manufacturer or give me a refund. It makes my car sound like a p.o.s. and i dont have the money for a gm pump. Thanks for your help everyone.

I am having the same problem right now with my '01 GT. I don't know much about cars, but I don't think the pump has a problem. Along with this whining noise the abs light and traction control off lights are also on. I replaced the R front hub and it is still the speed sensor. not sure where to go from here.

found out my noise was a combo of the power steering pump and the a/c clutch bearings which i have yet to fix.

Same problem on and off through the years and it's worse after a little slalom. I always just added fluid. A/C clutch is starting to make noise now too.

I was told by a dealer that there was a cover panel on the underside of the car that can fall off and expose the traction control and abs circuit causing a fault. I never confirmed this. I have the same issue now with the dummy lights for tcs and abs. Last time it happened I swapped out the left front hub and hope I don't have to go for the right. I noticed, however, that the wiring and harness on the hubs are delicate and its easy to bang them up with all that steel around. I nearly hit one with a torch while replacing a rotor. You may even just need to pop the harness back on if it came loose.
