Thread: fuel door spring bad

my fuel door wont stay closed and opens on turns, lol. i know the spring is bad or missing, can i buy just the spring assembly? i know i can get the whole door from morad but would have to paint it black since they dont have a black one. i was thinking i could do something with velcro or some other rigged way to keep it shut?

mine shuts but not all the way, you cant tell by looking at it until you mess with it. but i guess on the highway it flutters alot, so i hope you find an answer because im looking forward to it as well

I replaced the corroded spring last night. Pulling it out was easier than installing. I found a couple of good spring clips from the junk yard. The spring clips were removed as carefully as possible from the donor cars. I pulled 2 clips.

When i installed the first clip it deformed really bad. For the second clip i had to drill out two rivets, remove two screws towards the front of gas cap, loosened the two screws at the rear, pulled the bolt out holding the latch to the plastic cover, and pull the door off.

with the door off you can install or swap the spring clip in the closed position much easier than the open position. This is because the spring is not compressed as much "closed" than in the "open" position. This is why the door can flutter down the road.

I suggest finding a really good spring for the swap and pulling the door. Another option is gluing a magnet in place somewhere maybe replacing one of the rubber stops with a magnet.
