I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me out. I have a 00' Grand Prix Gt and my steering wheel is completly locked up except when I am moving with all the force of my two hands. What happened before that happened was I did a 180 in reverse in the snow then BAM! nothing. My power steering fluid was still full and the belt was still spinning the pump. I was looking for suggestions before I start to tear down the rack and pinion. Thanks.

Does the PS pump whine? Does the car drive fine otherwise? Did you check the PS fluid?

First thing you need to do is check the PS fluid. If it is low, refill it, and keep an eye out for leaks. If it is low, the fluid went somewhere. If there is still fluid, and the pump doesn't whine, I would lean toward a bad rack. These are common on grand prixs to go bad. So its not a surprise. It could be the pump, but usually the pump will make a noise/whining sound when bad.

And quit doing stupid **** and you won't have these kind of problems.

yeah I dont usually play around like that with my cars but I just got it and wanted to see what it had. Trust me I'm kicking myself in the ass now. But yes the ground was a foot deep in snow and there was no fuilds no sounds no parts no nothing in the snow. Other wise the car drives fine. No check engin light came on either. The fluid is as full as it was. Thought maybe it could have been ice but i put it in a warm garage but no luck. Where do I start taking **** apart at to get to my rack? top or under the car? Do you have any other ideas? Thanks

sounds like a bad rack, go from underneath it's the big metal piece that connects between both tires, not a fun job really

Sounds like a rack to me then. Probably blew out a seal inside.

To pull the rack, most of the work needs to be done underneath. You need to pull both tires, unhook the tie rod ends, unhook the electrical connector going to the rack, unhook the lines going to the rack, unbolt the rack from the subframe, drop the rear of the subframe just a little, supporting it with a jack and pull the rack out one side. I pulled mine out the driver's side.

    Install in reverse.

I would recommend getting a used GM rack from Ed or a local junkyard. They are much better than any aftermarket or refub rack from the local parts store.
