My 05' GT has lately been whining more than usual. I know how the 3800's usually make that "whining" noise, but this is bad. When I turn and give it gas, it's even worse. Could it be the power steering? How could I check, and where is it under the hood? Could I be low on fluid? let me know what you guys think.

could be the power steering. should be on the back left side of the motor under the alternator.

Should I just check the fluid level or are there other things that I should be looking for?

when your car is sitting in park, and you turn the steering wheel back and forth, does the noise change?

Well, not until i have it turned all the way to the left or to the right. as I'm turning when I'm parked I don't notice the noise to be that much louder. When I'm driving and I give it gas while I'm turning its definitely a much louder noise. It's loud enough to the point where it's borderline embarrassing when I pull into a parking spot or something.
Just a note, it makes a whining noise even when it's parked, and if I rev the engine a little bit, the noise gets a higher pitch the more I rev it.

I just went out in the parking lot and tried it, and it makes a noise while im turning, no matter if its all the way or not.
I checked the power steering fluid, and its very low, so im going to fill that back up, and if it still makes the noise im just going to take it somewhere.

If it is your power steering going bad, the “whining†noise you hear could be the auxiliary belt slipping on that pulley. IMO, take off your aux. belt and check all the pulleys for resistance. Starting with the power steering pulley.

To me, it doesn't sound like it's really slipping. I will definitely look into this, but it's almost as if something is having way too much resistance. I'm not very savvy underneath the hood of a car. Would this be easy to do, or would I want to take it somewhere and have it looked at?

Well, like I implied earlier it is probably just one component failing. And it might not be your power steering pump, there are several other components it could be. The serpentine belt in our cars has a lot more grip than the old V-belts, so a component has to really lock up to slip the belt. And it may slip for just a faction of a second, making it hard to catch early on. Also the fact, it is just one belt whipping around 6+ components, compared to the old days of like 1-3 components per belt. When a component hasn’t fully failed, it can be very difficult to find.Originally Posted by Billyb
Also, just on a side note. I doubt anyone here can answer your problems 100%, specially your starting problem too. You seem to do all the regular maintenance stuff well, but it also seems to me you have been letting issues build up on your car. Regardless of that, if you don’t even know how to take off the aux. belt just take it to a garage.

Typically I do not let issues build up on my car, I have just been very busy trying to wrap up my degree while working full time. I just went out into the parking lot to check my power steering fluid, and it is pretty much dry. I'm going to swing by on my way home and pick some up. They really put the power steering fluid in an awkward place didn't they?
If putting power steering fluid doesn't really make a difference, then I'm just going to take it to a garage.

yes its hard to get to and easy to over fill
do NOT overfill!!!!!
make sure you use a long funnel that has a bendable end to help keep you from spilling

A friend's GTP was making a noise that I thought was the power steering pump whining, about a day later it exploded one of the infamous idler pullies. So, add that to the things to check list.

Well, I got my power steering fluid to the correct level, and now good ole' Veronica runs like brand new. Hopefully it's not leaking. I've checked it every day for the past couple days, and the level hasn't seemed to change. But as of right now, I'm golden. Thanks everybody for your help.
