Could also be leaking where the hose is crimped to the tube. Notorious on all of that type of line that GM runs on every one of their vehicles.

Are you willing to lay money on that?
no, i stopped at the shop after they called me. it's spewing fluid from the return line fitting where it enters the rack. yet to be determined if the nut came loose, or worse than that.
cost to replace the line w/ labor?? $400
no, i cant replace the line on my own. no i havent been able to get any local assistance from the local boards (at least not that are close enough to get the car to them)
Man, I am truly sorry to hear that Toasty. Is that line that hard to replace? Im just asking I didnt imagine that line being that long of a run. Something just doesnt seem right with that quote. I would think that would include the cost of the rack as well.
WOW it cost me when i had mine done 40 dollars labor cause i bought the part.. Wow
how much is the line?
it's 3 hours of labor to change it. --- have to disconnect the steering shaft, drop cradle, yada yada.
previous place that did the work typically does good work, but i'm pretty sure they undercharged me on the labor when they did it. ---
i didnt get the breakdown on the parts/labor, but i'd venture to guess that the line is under $50
if i can get the crappy cell phone pic off my camera of the way the line is between the cat and sway bar, i'll post it
That is a very, very poor install. I would be going back to the place that did the rack install and trying to get them to do the work. I would be that the way they ran the line cause it to bend and crack. Or pull on the fitting to make it leak. To me, it is obviously a bad install job.
I highly doubt that if you go back there afterwards that they will refund your money. If you contact them ahead of time, shops will very often stand behind their work and fix the problem. But they won't let someone else do the work, then fork out the bucks for it.
But I can understand everyone is in a different situation, and sometimes that drives the paths you can take. But if it were me, I would make every attempt to contact the garage that did the initial install and talk to them before anyone else does any work to the car.
Yes the line runs any where from 20 to 50 dollars
Thats a bad installment, and misrouting of the line for sure. Regardless if it leaked or not, it should NOT be there.
I would call up the shop that did the work, and tell them that you did some work on ya-da-ya-da date and its leaking now. Can you help? They will say to bring it in, do that, they get it on the lift and will say what it is, and then go out with them, and have them show you. The make the comment, as to something along the lines as I don't think that line was to be ran that way, and clearly it got pinched or melted it causing it to leak.
If they try to back out saying that our mechanics are ASE certified and know what they are doing, and if thats how it came out thats how it goes back in. Then say ok, and leave. Wait a day or two, then go back in, with a picture of the correct routing of the lines from one of us, and show them, a stock installment, and then use your car for reference.
If its an honest shop they should repair the mess they made, part and labor for free, and clean up the mess as well. But if they are like any other dishonest shop, they will say we'll replace the part for free, but were going to have to charge you labor again. Thats why I work on my own cars...if I mess up, then its on me, but I normally don't because its not rocket science to work on cars.

well, 400 dollars later, she's all fixed and ready to go. steers VERY smooth... somehow even seems better than before, which could just be my immagination.... ive talked to the place that originally installed the line, and the service manager said he's gonna do what he can to make it right. he agrees from what i described that it was a poor installation.
so we'll see how it goes.
They may have flushed the system. In which case, makes any old power steering system feel like new. If your fluid ain't clear, and YOU don't know the last time its been changed out, I suggest doing a flush. It will feel and drive like a whole new car again.

LOL, with the ammount of fluid that went in, then out again with the massive leak, (leak was at the fitting for the return line at the rack, so everything that was put in, got pumped through the rack, then spewed out on the ground/car) i think i did the flush on my own
