Hey my neighbor has a 04 GP GT and he wants to delete his DRL's.

Before I tear into his car, is it the same as the 97-03 models where there
is a plug on the heatsink inside the dash that can be unplugged?

    thanks!

yeah I can do that. But I was also wondering if they had the same set up as the 97-03 models. I am talking about the heat sink plug on the drivers side.

from what I've seen, 04 and up don't have a DRL fuse, or a DRL relay, the BCM commands this function directly. I'm working on a write up for this, I will post as soon as I can

so the only way to delete the DRL's is to modify some code in a onboard computer in the car?

Am I the only 04+ that has a DRL override on the light/signal lever switch?

It would make since that they are programmed rather then ignition controlled they are required so called safety equipment( actually DRL's account for more accidents then cars with no lights on in the day, also thank greyhound for this BS)

the switch on the left of the column, it rotates forward and back, you can cut off the DRL's, run just the running lights, or have them on AUTO which is DRL.

no, we can all override DRL's from the switch however if an HID kit is installed (which is why I'm trying to disable mine) then running the ballasts with low voltage even for a second may damage them. traditionally DRL's use the headlight bulbs at around 5-7 volts to run them dimmer. this is one of the things I'm going to check on my day off. DRL's are not required in the US either. they are only required in Canada (see "drivers against daytime running lights" website) you can order any GM product without DRL's by ordering the correct option.

I am against DRL's completely, stupidest thing ever to be honest, I dont mind them coming on automatically in inclimate weather though, its a law here you gotta have the lights on with wipers but i forget alot.

I hope this gets straightened out, I am on this real close due to wanting HID's in the GP I got and its the same year. Can you upgrade the ballasts and have the DRL's on the parking lights or something? I havnt driven a car in 10 years that doesnt akways have the running lights on.

I work with a guy who actually just left a pontiac dealer after 20 years in late 07, ill tickle his brain and possibly get his alldata program to figure this out.

from what I've seen, no you cannot wire the daytime running lights to make the parking lights come on, because the BCM which commands the headlights to come on, uses the same circuit for the headlights and the running lights. so if you wired the parking lights to come on when the DRL's are activated, the parking lights will also come on when you try to turn on your headlights.
yes, headlights are required here when you have to use wipers, however that is a different issue altogether. those are not daytime running lights, those are headlights during the day.

ok, so I got my HID kit installed and wired relays in to control the voltage and a switch to manually control the headlights from coming on at all and it worked. when I flip the switch off, the parking lights stay on but the DRL's stay off. I'm working on a write up and will post as soon as I can. If you're not installing an HID kit, you can still use the same principle (which I will describe in my write up) if you need info now, PM me

so after messing around with wiring , I found out that it seems that the BCM uses the same voltage for DRL as for headlamps. meaning it basically turns on the headlamps when the DRL's come on. so the easiest way to keep the DRL's off is to wire a switch into the ground wire of the low beam assembly , the problem with this though is that its much easier to simply turn the switch to the off position when you get in the car.

thats what i was thinking about doing is just turn the switch to the off position before i start my car and then i wont have to worry about them coming on until i want them to. now my question is what about when i lock my car and set the alarm with my key fob and my head lights blink each time i hit the lock button? can i disable that and then ill be fine?

you can disable that from the "personal programming menu" on the drivers information center , the option is called " remote feedback" (I think) and it allows you to pick horns and lights on or off, the only thing is I have never tried this to see if it leaves the lights off at night.

I have 06 GP and trying to hook up the HID kit. I have found that if you go through the personal programing and turn interior light off and hold the button for 6 seconds, the DRLs do not come on when the car is started, and do not come on when I unlock my doors during the day. However, they do come on at night due to the AUTO On sensor.
I'm guessing the only way around the sensor is taking the dash apart and unplugging it, which I will not attempt.

If the BCM uses the same voltage, then it should be fine to keep from flickering, and w/ the above steps will eliminate DRL while parked, then all is needed is to manually turn off the DRL on the light lever everytime.

    Waiting on feedback.

yes, since the BCM basically turns on the headlights whenever DRL's are used, then you can simply hook up your HID kit and run it as normal, no problems with flickering should occur. this is why I never needed to come up with a write up for how to do this, it was much much easier to simply hit the switch to the off position if you didn't want them on.
As far as your 6 second suggestion goes, that's just the way the car is programmed to behave , you don't have to hold the button for six seconds . during the daytime, the lights don't come on because you don't need illumination as you would at night. similarly the DRL's don't come on until you put the car in gear , again this is normal. However if you start the car at night, then they will come on because the sun load sensor tells the BCM it's night and you need the illumination.
You should theoretically be able to wire in a resistor to the sun load sensor bypassing it, in order to fool the BCM into thinking it's daytime all the time, but this seems pointless because DRL's come on during the day.
