I have an 02 GP GT, 3800, dual temp control. While driving around today, normally have fan on 3. stopped for awhile, turned fan off, after getting back in and cranking it I turned fan on, NOTHING, kept turning and finally on High (5) fan clicked on! Switched selector switch back and forth several times but would only operate on high (5). Anyone able to tell me whats the problem? Thanks in advance for your help. Bill

Bill, there are 2 possibilities of what could be going on here. 1st, it is very commonly reported now from other GP owners that the ignition switch can begin to fail as these cars age. This is a definite design flaw in the 6th Generation Grand Prixs (1997-2003) One telltale sign that the ignition switch is on its way out is that the fan speeds will stop working on #1 through #4. The fan will resume working on #5 setting. Have you checked the cars headlights when you turn the fan to 1-4 settings? If the headlights go out when fan is on 1-4, then it is the ignition switch for certain. The fan and headlights will work normally when set to #5. Easiest way to check this is to park facing a wall. Turn on the headlights from the switch. Then cycle through the fan speed settings and observe the headlights. The switch is located on the steering column. A new switch can be bought from https://www.amazon.com/ACDelco-D1491...for+grand+prix. Detailed instructions can be found on http://sparkys-answers.com/2009/09/2...-changing.html
Another possibility is that the fan blower resistor is going bad or has gone bad. Many report that when the fan stops working from speed 1-4, and works on 5, then the resistor is faulty. The resistor is located on the passenger side footwell under the dash. A new resistor can be purchased from https://www.amazon.com/ACDelco-15-80...for+grand+prix

I realize when you ask the question "is it possible" that anything is possible. However, after removing the glove box, the fuse panel cover to the right of the glove box and the lower gray cover where the passengers toes would be pointing up to I fail to see anything close to what the picture looks like for a new resistor in this link, A new resistor can be purchased from https://www.amazon.com/ACDelco-15-80...for+grand+prix. Is it possible I am looking right at it and can not see it? Just for reference, I am talking about a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix two door. I did test the headlights on turn the fan motor selector switch to 1, 2, 3 and 4 and the headlights remained on but the fan continues to not work on anything other than position number 5. Any additional help in locating the fan motor resistor is very much appreciated. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to All !!! Bill

Don't worry it's there. It's right next to the blower motor. It's black so it's hard to see. If you can see the red and black wires coming off the blower motor, follow those to the resistor. The green board on it is facing up so you won't see that part of it.

There's some YouTube videos for the grand am but it's the same place pretty much.

If you determine that it is the ignition switch, you don't need to change it. Do this: http://www.clubgp.com/newforum/tm.as...mode=1&smode=1

If you do change the switch, do the ignition saver mod also, as the new switch will fail again over time.
