Have you considered expando- foam in a can? You know, like for houses? It fills voids and it's trimmable with a razor knife. It will give you a good backing for whatever you use for the next layer. Just don't get it on bare skin... DOES NOT come off !! until you grow more skin underneath it
For the record : I am NOT a naked meth-head who shoves rocks up my butt.

I thought about it but would rather not. Figure I can get some thin metal flashing or something and cut chunks out of it

Just saying, cuz I had a ford escort years ago that would flood drivers side floor because of rotton "A" pillar & hinge jamb. Filled that sucka with xfoam & smeared a layer of exterior acrylic caulk (with bare fingers, that's how I know it don't come off) and it was good to go...

Well it seemed to work fine don't notice any pudding water, if I was thinking more I would have just got a butyl patch to put over it. I think we sell something like a tape for use with skylights that would probably work.
