Hello group. 1998 GP GT. 300$. Needs a bunch of work, but was running well. Until I hit a big puddle hard, then drove through semi deep water. It was raining hard. Later that night the car crapped out. Later determined charging at 11.8 vdc. Replaced the alt and battery, no change. Likely possibilities? Instrument panel bulb? Don‘t think so, would have to double check. Fusible link? Assuming I determine that‘s the problem, not precisely sure how, I guess a continuity check, where do I get the material or component? Advance doesn‘t sell it. the pcm controls the alt, right? How would I check the inputs from that? Your input is much appreciated.

Belt might be slipping, if it squeals when started up, check that the belt tensioner is doing it's job... If the belt and tensioner is fine' then take the alternator back and have them test it.

    11.8 doesn't sound like it's charging.

Someone snag him a wiring diagram, one of the wires is from the pcm to apply the field in order to kick the alternator on after start up. Also you can fool the sense wire like ZZP suggests with a diode.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

A slipping belt would be obvious?

I did have to replace the coolant elbow. Put a few hundred miles on the car don't think I messed up the tensioner or anything. I'll look it all over I guess.

Yes info on checking pcm and all would be much appreciated. Autozone and All Data has resources I'm told, haven't availed myaelf of any of that yet.

    It's a brand new Bosch.

Both alternatore read 11.8 vdc when each was installed, including the reman from advance. I could just replace the serpentine belt and see what happens. Or get a tensioner from a camaro (the kind that doesn‘t have the integral lower bypass tube) ... and see what happens. Hopefully I‘ll have the time to look everything over tonight. See what I can see.

Check your grounds on the trans too, if they were already corroded then puddle finished them off is bet.

If the belts squeal other then when you go in a puddle then they need to be replaced anyways. I'm a fan of gates brand belts, they last pretty long.

I'd bank on the fusible link if you replaced the alternator and battery. I had the same problem in my wife's Malibu and my brothers Ranger. I'll see if I can find a diagram on google.
