I did the lower intake gaskets on 02 regal 3800 non supercharged. For some reason I could not get the throttle body bracket that''s mounted underneath, I could not get it off without removing the tps.

I thought this was weird because when I did the lowers on my 2001 prix non supercharged, the bracket slightly hit the tps but it cleared with out being removed. Maybe because the regal has the California emissions pipes etc...

Well anyway I got everything back together cleaned the throttle plate which was very gunked. I put the tps back on once i had everything installed. But it would not install the way it came off. It came of with the throttle completely closed, but now to get the bolts to line up the throttle is slightly open which obviously throws off the idle when first started, then it will start and run normal I guess the computer adjusts.

I have tps code and super high idle upon start up in the morning. The only thing I can think of to do is re clean the throttle plate maybe gunk is holding the plate open I will change the sensor but don't know how if that will change anything......

You don't need reclean the TB, I'd bet since you messed with the TPS it's reading is off. I found this procedure. Give it a shot and see if the idle sets back to where it used to be.

It is highly recommended that you reset the computer for 15 minutes to allow the computer to relearn the new TPS values. To perform the "TPS learn proceedure" upon first startup, turn the key to on, wait 30 seconds, then turn the key off. Now start the vehicle and let the idle learn.
The engine may idle high for the first few startups, especially if the computer hasn't been reset. This is normal and it will learn the idle adjustments needed to reach factory desired idle speed.

I've had tps issues as well before. one time when I had a high idle was because the throttle cable wasn't seated right, so it held the tb plate open a little. another thing to consider is that when the temperature is cold, the computer is programmed to idle higher. another thing you may have done is cleaned the idle air control valve, which may have not been getting very good readings, so now that it is working like it should, the idle the car has learned to idle at is different. it does seem strange to not be able to get the tb off without taking the tp sensor off, but I guess california is strange like that.

make sure you install the tps properly, it is spring loaded, you will have to install it with it turned a little clockwise fromt he bolt holes, then turn counterclockwise till you feel the spring force from the tps arm touching the TB shaft pin.

any mechanical motion sensors that are sprung like this need to be properly installed in the slack spot then rotated till the holes line up and the arm contacts.

because of tons of screwups like this is why the new generation of sensors are form fit for D shaped shafts and are full floating sensors....

I would say the tps is holding the throttle slightly open, even before I installed the throttle cables, but I will go back and check the cables. I will also do the re learn procedure.

@turbocharged I put it on then turned it to line the bolts and that's when the throttle plate slightly opened. But I installed it slightly counter clockwise of the bolt holes and turned it clockwise to get it lined up. So basically, I did it opposite of what your saying. So let me get back to the car and do it the way you've instructed hopefully that does it.

    Thanks for tips

yeah thats your problem, your on the wrong side of the TPS arm. if you datalogged the TPS voltage it would never change since its sitting on the wrong side of the shaft pin
