So I get home from work today to have my sister immediately rush up to me and start asking to look at her car. She tells me that there is something going on with her steering and that she can smell rubber burning. So I go ahead walk out to the car and get in and start it, but then I think to myself to do a quick walk around and look at the wheels. I come around to the driver rear wheel to see it pointing in and rubbing on the trailing arm, so first thought for me is to check out the lug nuts (wouldn't be the first time a lug stud has broken off). So I pop the cap off and everything is sitting snug against the hub, so under the car I go! Get underneath and the "control arms?" appear to be fine and have no play, the strut also appears to be fine. Anywho on to the questions...

Is it possible that the hub has split and is on the verge of falling apart? (She says it started doing it just blocks from the house)

Could it be the knuckle itself is defective?

    What else could it be?

Is the trailing arm bent? They tend to bend easy

id jack it up, see if the wheel moves. we've seen 2 members back hubs come apart while driving. its not pretty either.

Trailing arm is straight as can be. Not even a bend from an absent minded person jacking in the wrong place

Ha my mom told my sister that if that's the case to just drive it until it falls apart and then collect the insurance money (full coverage).

The adjustable "control arm?" closest to the back seems to be the issue. I jacked the car up and upon inspection the nut that keeps the end of the arm from moving back and forth has a good inch gap between it and the adjustable end. So me tightening it back down to the nut should put it back straight yes?

yes, that sounds about right. if its still out of whack you should be able to eye ball it some, then take it in for alignment.

id think the lock nut stayed put. why would it walk?

Yeah if it hasn't been touched since it was made or for at least a year it won't just move on it's own. You p*ss anyone off lately?

She has more enemies than I keep track of. Only thing is they are not very car saavy and the best they would be able to do would be to break windows or loosen lug nuts

I don't think half the cars in my area were able to start today. Our truck wouldn't, mine barley did, and at work we were slammed with a ton of no start conditions coming in on tow trucks.
