strap filter wrenches are perfect for those.
even though you can still get them with the claw
I just use one of these, they are my favorite filter pliers.

Rode the GTP near a hunnert mile today, she never flinched. Crawled around in the attic of a hunnert year old house too, ended up fixin some wiring and restoring A/C to a disabled friend lady's home for a bacon and cheese sandwich. Just in time, been rainy and cooler all week and the sun just started peekin out tonite but is due to blaze for a few days. Texted car-showing boss proof of weeks mission accomplished, it was a good day. Might try my hand at weedeater fixin tomorrow, of my own. Could NOT figure how to tear it down enough to replace fuel line last time I messed with it. Need it now!
The very bottom on most oil filters are pretty strong too, the last 3/4in with the ridges/humps.
I don't squeeze the **** outta the filter but just enough to dent it a little to give it some bite, then I turn them and it won't crush it all the way. You get good at doing certain cars that way when you do thousands of oil changes a year.
I've been known to use the old band type with pry handle and those are great IF the car design allows it. Had to buy the pliers-type when I went FWD bcuz tiny filter.
Crammed an 04 gtp radiator in my car today. Not exactly a bolt in process, much choppin and a little welding. Freakin' hose clamps were kicking my arse for a bit. Couldn't get the one on the water pump back on, didn't feel like taking the belt and idler pulley off. So I devised a way to kick its ass. A little fishing line...

Slip it on and then just cut the line when I got it where I wanted it. Felt good about kicking some hose clamp ass.
sounds like you couldve used some hose clamp pliers!
