I got a 02 Grand Prix. Michigan winters suck. Looking at adding a remote start. I see em advertised for $99 installed most cars. I know my car does not have a chip in the key but when I get there the guy starts telling me it's extra because the chip is built into the end of the key etc.... so I'm just trying to figure out if the guy is pulling a fast one on me trying to score some extra easy cash. Just kinda curious.

I've never heard of anything like that but can't say with 100% certainty. When I had mine installed they didn't tell me anything odd and just did it with no extra charges. Sounds like you should go to a different shop.

You sure there is no chip? I thought all these cars had them. Or had yours been bypassed?

If you have a chip, you need a bypass module.

If you don't have a chip, install alarm as normal.

Be warned though; $99 install is a quickie install, and they probably use scotch-locks and tape. My buddy did mine for me and took him 4-5 hours; he soldered and shrink-tubed all connections.

this is a pic of my Keys. The one with the chip in the key is my Buick and the one without is the 2002 Grand Prix. My take on how he described it was something additional had to be done to install remote start on the Grand Prix. I'm really at a loss so like I said just trying to figure out if the guy is trying to snake me.

Should have PK3 engraved on it if it is chipped. Like I said, no chip = no extras.

Passkey 3 has a RF chip in the key.

Why not? If they have to do extra work, they should be able to charge for their time.

The 3 97-03 gps I've had have all had the pk3 m on the key. I'm fairly sure they have all had chips in them, never had to get a new key done but I've had two 00's and one 01. My 05 grip had a chip when I got another key for it

The keys for 97-03 have the "chip" inside of the rubber part, the one you can see in the shaft of the key is a resistor type chip. I am 99% positive all 97 and up grand prix's have keys passlock 3 or "chipped" keys as people call them.

Every single 97+ Grand Prix has a wireless chip key. The chip is molded into the plastic.

Off topic a bit BUT, if anyone needs a new fob & key, I bought something like this on ebay (not this one; this was just a quick search) And the fobs work well. I took the keys to home depot and talked to the lady - she cut them for free and I was on my way. I got home tested them out and got both new keys to start the car and open each door but not the trunk. The fobs also worked well all buttons functioned properly.
