How are GTPs so much faster than GTs

How does a GTP run about a second faster than a GT with only 40 more HP? I've always wondered this. I mean 40 HP isnt very much. IDK of any car that picks up at least a second in the 1/4 mile with only 40 more HP. Sorry if this is a dumb question. The Moonshine made me do it. Expect more stupid questions from me as the night goes on.

HP isn't everything.... the L67 makes ~80 ft/lbs more torque as well.

Torque gets you going.... power keeps you going. Hence the significant difference in the quarter mile.

Forced induction aswell. Superchargers don't have lag, they give all the power right away. A 3.8 N/A's powerband is alot different than the supercharged cars.

while we are on the subject of GTP vs GT, anybody want to guess at the hp/tq numbers for a L26 with cai, hv3, er rockers, plog, overkill pcm tune?

ill guess, 20 hp over stock, maybe.

na engines dont respond to mods like a blower engine does.

one guy modded up a na engine, cam and all, he was very let down at the dyno.

With just a few bolt ons (gutted airbox, 3" catless dp, tstat, powrtuned, basic race prep, little stuffs) my '99 GT would run consistent 15.2's @ 90/91 at the track. Not too far off from a stock GTP (14.8's @ 93). Mod for mod there's no comparing na to fi, though, naturally. Was a 3400 lb race weight, as well (coupe with 1/8 tank of gas and spare/jack removed)

Also, don't forget that you have to think in terms of the torque curve, not just peak torque. You could have two cars with the same peak torque, but the one with the broader torque curve will win drag races every time.

Superchargers do a great job at giving a nice broad torque curve.

It's the gearing as well.

Plays quite the factor.

Maybe 180/200?

My buddy's GT2 cam/exhaust/bolt-ons N/A car made 202/220 to the tire.

Unfortunately, these motors are boat anchors without forced induction. I think the record for an NA 3800 was 270 something wheel. Which is... awful. They just don't flow very well and there isn't much displacement.

There was a 2000 or so model N/A GT in an older issue of GM High Tech Performance magazine that ran a 13.9 at I believe 98 MPH. Boltons, heads/cam car. IDK what else. Probably some weight reduction too.

If you took physics / calculus, think about integrating the area under the torque curve. Flatter torque curve = faster ET because so much more area under the curve.

That's how I got my 4300# Buick with 2.56 rearend ratio to run 11.6 in the 1/4 mile on street tires. The peak torque / HP numbers wouldn't blow your mind, but my torque curve was beautifully flat.
