Vibration During Braking

2001 GTP has started a moderate vibration when braking above 65 mph. The vibration all seems to be felt in the steering wheel and none in the brake pedal. During normal driving without braking, there is no vibration at any speed. Also when braking below 65 mph, there is no vibration. This vibration was there before and after a wheel rotation and balancing. I am leaning towards warped brake rotors, but wanted to get your opinion first before I start into the repair. Am I on the right path or should I look into something else?

Classic "warped" rotors.

Get some new pads and rotors and be on your way.

Deal with this all the time at work.

That's what I thought. I am off to the parts store tomorrow after work and get this done. Thanks!! Won't be changing the pads though. They were just changed a month ago. Should have changed rotors at the same time.

BTW 5 fingers......hope you are a Vikes fan and not a Packer fan. I would hate to take advice from within the division. Lol.

Nope, not a fudge packer fan. I stick with vikings but I'm no die hard fan lol.

Being from the northwest, I'm not much for hockey. I have been a Viking fan since day 1. I have seen enough misery with that team to last me 3 lifetimes. Maybe they got the right coach now though.

Thanks to you and russosaur for confirming my diagnosis! I will be picking up the rotors tonight. I changed the pads out a few weeks ago.

if the old pads now have grooves cut in them like im sure the rotors have, id buy new pads.

If they are only a month old, I'd keep the pads personally. Just go break them in hard. Braking in a wide open lot: 25-5mph 3 or 4 times; then 45-5mph 3 or 4 times; coast to a stop somewhere and put in in park for about 10 minutes while you ponder the meaning of life.

Edit: Scotty is usually pretty spot on though...

i dont do that dumb break in crap no more, more problems then its worth in the end.

new pads and rotors, i drive them all nice and brake lightly only for 2 or 3 days, depends on how much you drive it. me its like 3 days cause i dont go no where. i do what i can to avoid getting a to much heat in them at all.

if you drive further a day or so tops.. you'll feel the brakes come in over time. once they do my god do they stop well. and you took no chance of warping the rotors or glazing your pads doing all this hard braking BS.

Thats probably why my brakes are crap. Before I knew better I got new brakes on then my dad did 75 and slammed on the brakes like 3 times.

When I changed the pads a couple weeks ago, it took a day or so before the brakes felt more sensitive. Huge improvement. My lesson learned............change the rotors at the same time.

From what I gathered from a brake manufacturer video, the break in process is simply to apply the "friction material" from the pad to the rotor in an even coat. I'm sure there are different approaches to get it done. Sometimes though, an uneven distribution of the friction material can simulate a warped rotor.

I think rotors and pads at the same time is ideal though.
