Thread: spare tire

Ok hold up, LOL. Am I the only one still driving around with a 30-45lb spare tire in the trunk?

It's almost like I forgot it being back there but at the same time i haven't really thought about it either.

Now I know you weight saving racing guys probably take it out(especially during races) but what about you daily drivers, spare tire or no spare tire aboard?

Its not that heavy but damit mines must be full of air or something bc it now has me thinking twice about keeping it

I haven't carried mine in years that's wht roadside assistance is for plus I'm usually close enough where if it came to it I could just have a buddy bring me what I need. Now if I go out of town better believe I throw it back in there.

I carry mine. I would rather have a 40 lb spare tire and be able to change the tire and get myself going in 15 minutes than have to wait 2 hours for a tow truck. It's senseless to not carry it.

I wouldn't call a tow trunk unless it was a last priority. Instead I'll pick up the phone..phone a buddy and have a spare within 30 mins or I'll just get to were in going depending on how bad the flat is. Less weight in the trunk.

Speaking of boats, I don't carry a spare in the old car. I just don't own one right now. In the road trip days, hell yes I carried an in-between front / rear size spare with a small floor jack and a four way.

In the GTP, I carry the stock space saver plus a full size spare. De-rusted and tested the jack just the other day, those drain plugs don't drain miuch lol.

i got mine, the factory jack too. and a bottle jack too if i have a front flat. cause ill have take a back off and put it on the front cause f bodys brakes.

i just took about 80 lb's of dead weight out of my trunk. idk why but when people have a dead battery im the one who always gets asked if i have cables. and most of the time ill go jump some one.

so the other day i get asked for a jump im like yeah i got cables ill be right over, and i pop my trunk and there gone. they got removed with the 80 lb's of crap lol i felt bad for the guy, hes like i left my wife in the car and she had the radio on and well here i am lol

so i got them back in there now. ive only got the 12 inch sub and a milk crate with some tools and my car wax crap. lots of room back there now.

Forgot to mention I keep a pair of battery cables and a air compressor right in the spare trunk area so unless I shred a tire I can easily inflate it enough to get me back home.

i like the compressor idea. used to have one years ago.

Sure does come in handy.. I rather just inflate it instead of swapping on the spare. I have only been in the position once where I actually needed to use a spare and that required 2 after I hit a pot hole and bent my rims. I'll continue this method until it backfires.

ive had more tires blow out than go flat to the rim. i also have ran over some damn messed up stuff. one time i ran over a high heel with my truck never saw it, but heard the thump thump thump sound. so i pulled over and was like ? it took 5 or 6 plugs to get it to hold air. had to replace it the whole was huge and to close to the side wall even if patched. this was a bfg all terrain 33x12.5r16.5 damn tires were like 150 a pop too.

Well I also forgot to add... of course I also carry a plug kit and a small compressor. Thats not much weight penalty and they both get used. Stopped carrying cables though, my good ones were permanently borrowed.

I keep a plug kit In the glovebox. I'm usually very prepared for a situation.. I usually have a small common toolbox in the trunk as well. I just don't ride around without a spare just for the heck of it. I do it because I'm pretty damn prepared as is and I usually stay within the town or next town over so if something was to happen hrs but a huge hassle. I compare not carrying a spare to like having subs... Most people may not notice the difference with the additional weight but I do. One of the reason I got over the subwoofer phrase a long time ago. Sure if the car is relatively stock you don't necessarily go crazy removing the spare but if your taking the time to really mod you'll notice a difference.

I keep mine in there, and of course check the pressure every so often (does no good to carry a flat spare!)

I also have a tire repair kit, and a small compressor.
I've never had to put the spare on, but have had a tire pick up a nail and been able to patch it and air it back up.

Crazy.....well I do have AAA so I wouldnt mind getting my money worth from them. Funny thing is the last 3-4 Times my car broke down over the last 2yrs had nothing to do with my tires. BUMMER.....

Having Dynamat in the trunk doesn't really add noticeable weight but when you combine that with the spare tire and a full tank of gas(and possibly a sub which 8/10 of us have and other stuff thats inevitable like groceries), well now we're talking a nice bit of weight. Damn, forgot about rear seat passengers and/or kids like me....with car seats.

Man, that weight added up quick and that's what most of us deal with on the daily or at least I do.

Lol, now if some of that weight including the spare tire was sitting over the front tires....then we'll be GOLDEN.....it'll never happen though.

My spare tire will sit in my garage until I use it in the next month when I drive across country back home to Philly then it'll sit somewhere once again. As long as im in the city AAA will be used and or a friend/family can bring my spare to me.

All these years now the GS is 30lbs lighter, fortunately I been took the spare tire out of the LS 8yrs ago but unfortunately it has had a heavy ass sub box with two twelves and three amps ever since. I took out the Optima battery a couple years ago,
