I just recently purchased a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix gt, 66K miles. A few days ago I noticed my tacho was at 1k when the car was off, and would randomly slowly go back down to zero. It seems to respond when I hit the gas but then it starts falling when I maintain speed.

How would I fix this and how concerned should I be?

So it sometimes falls to zero while driving?

Has it ever stalled on you yet??

It seems to get stuck at 1000 rpm when falling. The best description for its movement is floaty or bouncy... It stalled once when I first started it, I heard it start and then it just stopped. Almost like it was not getting enough fuel. The stalling only seems to happen when the car is warm. There is also a strong smell of gas/exhaust when I idle in the morning to de-ice the car.

Time to remove and clean the throttle body. They get carboned up on the back of the butterfly and cause issues.

From there, it may be time to suspect a crankshaft position sensor.

I cleaned the throttle body. the back was coated in carbon and the front had white-ish specks on it....almost looked like salt deposits. I havn't notice the issues yet, I will keep you guys updated.
