Yea if you soaked it down with penetrating oil it should burn off pretty quick. I had a strange smell when mine was new but it's a catless one. I think they spray some kind of a coating on the stainless. It should burn off after a couple good heat cycles.

New converters also have material that hasn't been heated yet and a couple heat cycles it will smell like burning plastic/paint.

the new intermediate pipe i put on stunk pretty bad till i took it on a 100 mile road trip, then the smell was gone.
