So my son calls me today and tells me he is having issues with the GP. Tells me he went into a store and when he came out the stereo no longer worked. Was also getting a lot of malfunction lights. He turned the engine off and had a difficult time restarting it. Told him to bring it right home as it seemed like the alternator crapped out. He made it almost here. Called AAA and got it home. Checked the battery voltage and it was 7.5v. Took the alternator off and brought it to Pep Boys. It checked out fine. So I get back home and decide to have the battery checked. While removing the battery I saw that one of the caps was off. Brought the battery to Auto Zone for a free replacement. Car fired right up and all is well. Getting 14.5v while running.
So my question is this. What happened to the battery that it blew a fill cap off? That is a new one for me. First thing that comes to mind is a faulty voltage regulator that got the battery overcharged and built up pressure. But the 14.5 volts I am getting would say no to that theory. Any ideas?
