After driving on the freeway for awhile earlier with no problems, I got back in my car to get back on and head home when the service engine light came on for the first time in a few months. The way the car ran was fine, I went and had it scanned and the code is P0305 and they basically gave me three things that fixed it before, changing the coil packs, ignition coils, or ignition module. Im not very mechanical lol but are these things that could be done without taking it to a shop? any other ideas what it could be? I read it could be the crank sensor too which kind of makes sense to me because the car has randomly shut off on me while driving but it only happened once and it was awhile ago, any ideas?

Where did you have it scanned? if it was somewhere like autozone where they scan it for free its not that great of info. if you dont mind spending the money its better to take it to a shop to have it diagnosed on a real scan tool where they can see where its missfiring and how often. if it is two cylinders on the same coil pack obviously its the coil pack, if its just one cylinder you probably just have a bad plug or something. i know from working in a shop that often mechanics put in spark plugs with air tools out of laziness and that could lead to a cracked plug

oh for sure. if the misfire isnt noticeable under regular driving conditions, you will be perfectly fine. you may notice small mpg differences but it is completely drivable unless it is shaking your fillings out lol

If the light is gone you will be fine. The pcm runs self checks on the cars systems and when multiple missfires are detected at once will throw a code. Each time the car is started it will run the test again and after so many tests without multiple missfires detected the pcm will get rid of the code. Cars are not 100% efficient and missfire every once in a while. It just happened that multiple missfires happened at once. I would not bother checking anything unless the engine light comes back on. If it does, then proceed to do what was recommended earlier

now if you want to know for sure, while getting on the freeway just open up your throttle allllllll the way. Try it a few times. And if your engine light comes on or flashes then you do have a consistent missfire. if the light doesnt come on from that, forget about it. another way to check that isnt as reliable especially if youre not looking at a missfire counter on a scanner is by brake torquing at lower rpms sometimes your car will missfire. (such as 1500-2000 rpm's) just dont go crazy on the brake torquing
